2-man saw thread

I was at an auction yesterday, and picked up what I was told is an old Disston. It has a Mercury 7 HP Motor on it, with Model number KB6-AY. Not very often you find a two man chainsaw, so I had to buy it.

The saw is in very rough shape. The Pull cord handle was torn off, so I could not check for compresion. Also the fuel cap is broken off, but everything else seems to be there. I plan on tearing it down, cleaning it up, get it running, and put a nice coat of paint on to make a Good show saw.

The problem is, I normally only work on Remingtons, and I would like to have some more information on this before I start working on it. Any information you could give me on rebuilding this saw would be a great help. IPL's, Service Manuals, or some personal experience would be awesome.

I buy PB blaster in the one gallon can and it comes with a nice squirt bottle too for 22 dollars.

Start hoseing it down with lube oil.

Haha, That is deffinately some good advice. Where do you find PB blaster in a gallon can? I have a hard time finding it in even the spray bottles anymore.

I have found the gallon cans in a few different auto parts stores. I think WD40 also used to sell in a gallon can.

The small PB cans can sell for 6 to 8 bucks so the gallon and the cool squirt can makes a great deal when you go through a lot of it.

Same here. At auto parts stores, I can only find the aerosol cans of PB. I try to buy a few every time they have it on sale. Just got two more the other day. I've been buying gallon cans of WD40 for years. Dosn't come with the spray bottle anymore (at least not in my area), but I have a few spray bottles left over. Pricing of the gallons of WD40 here varies wildly between $12-$21. I save the old gallon cans and fill them with a mixture of 1/3 cheap ATF and 2/3 kerosene. Works well as a penetrant/preservative/metal saw cleaner. Doesn't harm the paint or decals either. Have done the same with WD40, but that stuff is much more expensive than kerosene. There's still one gas station in the area that sells kerosene for a decent price at the pump. Kerosene in the hardware stores is as expensive as WD40. I use one of my leftover WD40 spray bottles to dispense my 'magic mix'.

Was at the new ACE hardware in town today and saw the gallon of WD40 for 17 bucks.

Those Mercs have a few weak spots to watch out for. The helper handles are almost always cracked or welded but with your shorty bar you might be ok.

The outer bar mount flange on the trans like to break off too. Start dumping oil on your chain link and bar surface.

Also soak the muffler bolts and take care of it. A good muff is hard to find.

Pull your plugs and presoak the cylinders regardless if it turns or not. OIL is our freind.

Parts for those can be found.

Guess I will have to look for the big cans. Work gets the big cans of Croil....maybe I will borrow some of that for now. The chain moves freely, but I think I'll take the chain and bar off, and just soak it in a tub of oil until I'm ready for it.

Speaking of the chain, I've never seen one like this. Does not look like a normal chainsaw chain, but more like something you would find on a buck saw. I will have to figure out how to sharpen it.

I always liked PB Blaster better. This saw is a very intimidating compared to the Remmies I normally work on. So many more parts. Plus there are a lot of levers and buttons that I just don't have any idea what they do.

Scratcher chain. Somewhere MrBowSaw I believe posted sharpening instructions. Gotta make sure you have the left and right cutters ask me how I know. hahaha

Didnt know what fourm to post this in? There is no sticky for these un common saws. So Bam now its here in the two man. Ive had this reed prentice Timberhog for a while now. Ive only seen a couple more. This one runs good and cuts slow! Are these fairly rare?

Fairly rare, yes, but not extremely. Mine is yellow and sold by Riteway, but is the same saw.

The Bantam is the smallest of the RP's. The other RP's classify as two man or one man.

From left front is the RP 50, Bantam in middle and Timberhog, (Craftsman 1200) on right.

Back row are the Craftsman 1200's. The 1200's and the Timberhog and the 50 all have a mcCulloch Aviation motor.

Funny you say that, the recoil on my saw is yellow. But I do have the original,you got any pics of yours Anybody know what vintage they are?
