the 044 is starting to feel a bit tired. maybe I ought to check the compression? If im not going for a new saw then maybe just a freshen up with a new top end. Excessive muffler mods/porting are a bit tough as I do all of my work in an anti chainsaw tree hugging residential environment.

The 044 is great on the ground, but up in the tree hanging in a harness it always feels slow and heavy. I dont know how it compares to 460 weight wise, but I keep look at that spec of having an extra horsepower. Very tempting! I dont think I'd go up to 660 as my only other saw, too heavy despite the power.

I know I could get a good price used for my 044, and that tempts me into buying a brand new 460. On paper they're not that far apart, but in reality my 044 is probably not that fresh and a new saw will be. That really makes the gap substantial. I think its going to come down to either keeping the 044 and freshening it or selling it and going 460. nice looking lines on those 441's and 460's!

I'd probably lean towards whacking a new top end on it. Maybe even get in touch with Al and see if he'll do some port/muffler work for you. I'm sure you'd be pretty happy with it's performance then :)

I think you need to buy one of my modded 7900/7901's with a Stihl bar adaptor

you know Matt, when you make comments like that I instantly know that we could never be friends or have any kind of meaningful relationship. You're like that buddy who seems ok, but when you get a few beers into him he says something like "hey man, why dont we wax our whole bodies then both have sex with your girlfriend and then videotape it? it would be awesome".

however... if you've got a 460 topend for my 044, then frankenstein freakiness is all cool with me ;)

I did a mild muffler mod on my MS260, it's a little louder but not too bad... It definitely has more power. I even left the screen in it. Back to the 044. I like what Anthony_Va. said, put a 460 topend on it and get a DP cover and your good. A fresh saw with more cc's. On the other hand a new saw is always good too and you can't go wrong with the MS460....

It's not like a bar adaptor is some sort of kinky strap on bedroom device  Is your girlfriend hot though?

Anyway, ahem, I can get a BB 460 top end for you. May take a month or so :)

"if you've got a 460 topend for my 044, "
Now that is a really hard combination to beat .:clap::clap:

The 460 is not enough of a jump from an 044 IMO. I think you need a 660 or even an 064. If you are needing to spend alot of time in the air then the 064 may be a great choice as it is lighter than a 660 but still rips. If you are doing alot of pine than an 064 would be my choice due to the power to weight ratio.

I agree on the 460 part but not sure he needs a 660 at this time. If that 044 is tired and needs some top end work, send that bad boy off to be ported. A ported 044 will run with a stock 660 all day long. I have a ported 660 but the 044 is my main felling saw.

Theres a great looking ms441 on Ebay right now for 600 shipped. It looks barely used.

Other than that, I will say again, if I hav'ent already, that you prolly don't need a 660. I could not imagine using mine in a tree all day and I'm pretty strong when I'm not drunk. :)

I'm sticking with the 460 topend and mild port with DP muffler for you. It really is'nt that much louder on my 660, just deeper if you know what I mean. The one on Ebay is nice, but I just realized you we're down yonder, so it may cost you more for shipping.

ROTFLMAO

and ditto sending it to Al for some massage work

Yea, I see where they say lower 48 only now. Sucks. Well, maybe you could bribe them with a little extra cash. I don't see the big deal with shipping overseas. Heck, I'll buy you a saw and ship it to you from over here for nothin. :) except you pay for everything.

Shaun your unreal...your spot on...with a foresight like that, your in the wrong business! :)

What ever you do, don't get rid of that saw. There has been some good options here with that saw. Freshen up or a 460 top end. As far as muffler mods, they are noisy regardless with or without, hence hearing protection.

I agree, it's just the same as if posting interstate but a lot of people and companies from the US refuse to deal outside the continental US.

Maybe there's potential banking issues with payments if not a credit card, (international money transfers used to be a pain in the arse at times, I think some of your smaller banks were scared of doing business with our banks and fees were excessive) but AFAIK none of the Aussies on here have had problems with credit card payments, etc. and we pay the international transfer fees anyway.

A lot of people in the US refuse to believe there are even continents outside the US ;)

Matt, it has nothing to do with the fact that us Americans don't believe in Alien life forces( some alleged continents outside our border), it does have something to do with the fact that you guys sound funny and drive on the wrong side of the road. What's up with that?. We could get along better if you guys admitted your cars look funny. :):)

hi all,
Im looking at a 2 saw plan, I had a 192t and an 044 but the 192t is being replaced with a 200t and Im wondering whether I ought to look at something other than my 044. If i was going to have a 3 saw plan I'd probably look at 200t, 361, 660 but I really dont have room for 3 saws.

That leaves me with 2 saws, a 200t plus one other saw. I dont do tree work full time, I'm actually a builder. But I do on average 1-2 take downs a month, mostly tricky stuff suspended over houses and they need to be taken down branch by branch then chunked down. As such I dont do a lot of the traditional fell/limb/buck. most of my limbing and bucking is done in the tree ;)

Im in aus, and about 60% of my tree work is pine which is considered to be a weed locally. The rest is native australian trees, mostly gums. I leave a 24" bar on my 044 most of the time and have a 36" that gets me out of trouble on the bigger stuff.

What do I want? A saw that's lighter and more powerful of course! Would be great if it weighed as much as a 361 but had the power of an 090 ;-) I want something with a bit more zip than the 044 even though its grunty. weight is definitely an issue, a day of trunking down 2'~3' trunk hanging in a harness doesnt do much for my back and wrists.

would a 460 be much of a gain on an 044? should I be thinking 660? something else?

thanks!
Shaun

You should think about something that is not Stihl, whatever size you fall down on - except if it is 120cc.

The last smaller Stihl that was the best in its class was the MS361, and by now it is mostly gone!

I'll admit our cars look funny when your police forces stop ordering them as rebadged Chevy (Lumina?) Patrol Cars :)
