Your facts are correct, but backwards! The 346xp is a 3.4 hp saw. The Dolmar 5100 is a 4hp saw; advantage Dolmar.

The Husky 346xp is a 10.6 lb saw while the Dolmar is a 11lb+ saw; advantage Husky.
.....

Dolmar have adjusted the 5100S rating down to 2.8kw/3.8bhp.
The "New edition" 346xp (50cc vs 45) has been rated at 2.7kW/3.7hp, so far, but it ramains to be seen when it hits the market, and if it can match the torque of the Dolmar.

I am also pretty sure that the weight differense between the "old" 346xp and the 5100 actually is more than a pound.
What the "new" 346 weights, is unknown so far......

The Husky is a very slim and neat design with an outboard clutch, while the Dolmar is wider, with an inboard (it is sort of a trade-off).

am very very pleased with mt 346 xp would choose it again I wish all the new saws I had ever gotten was as good as the 346 xp

Pick them both up.

They are both good saws, based on reputation. You'd be happy with either one. Pick them both up. The Dolmar is heavier, you'll know after holding them for awhile if that matters to you.
For me, in a 50cc saw. I'd go with the lighter of the two.
I like my 5100, but I'd recommend the 346 in this case. Although, they are close and you'd be happy either way.
At the time I bought mine, I decided on the 5100, I had to see what all the hype was about. I like it..it IS a good saw. But I'd go with the lighter weight 346.
I wouldn't get rid of the Dolmar to get a 346 or anything, they are pretty close.
If I were going to choose between those two saw again, I'd get the Husky 346.

Mitch

Spoke with my Husky dealer yesterday and apparently the new 346 isn't close to being released...he hasn't heard of anything yet and I figure the current 346 would have a price drop first...dunno. With the narrow powerband of the 346, is it a dog down low at medium speed settings when needing to cut a 1-2" branch, or does it need to be revved high all the time? Just curious but looks like that's going to be the ticket for me.

Never "halv-throttle" any chainsaw!!!!!!

Most carbs have no mid-range jet, so they will likely run lean = no good/fried engine.....:blob2: :blob2:

It is much better to just "blip" the trigger, all the way in/out, for small branches.

The 346 is such a fast reving machine it will scream before you know it.

my vote

I think singler said it well.

these are limbing saws and a half pound makes a difference, the dolmar is a nice saw but there are a couple of reasons that I prefer my 346 over my 5100.

Air filtration

throttle response

weight

modding potential

even a muffler mod will put you neck and neck with a stock 5100. And a full mod once again neck and neck.

I'll put in another plug for primer bulbs. They are simple, old-school technology that works.

I hate them, the bulb gets old, cracks and then sucks air and needs replaced. I have had them and hate them.

They are the suck IMO

For modded saws, his 353s will beat them both, according to ehp.....:biggrinbounce2:
