I just bought a new to me 372xpg non xt. I inspected the fuel lines, pulled muffler and carb out, looked at the cylinder, looked good on both sides, rebuilt the carb, removed limiter tabs. Noticed the saw had a black coil put some fresh gas in it ran it a bit and tried to tune it and can not get the saw to run over 9000rpm with the h screwed in all the way. Tried 2 different tachs with no luck, tried tuning in the wood and can't get it too cut like it should. Tried spraying brake clean around intake boot and under the clutch cover with no result. Thanks in advance I have put more hours in the saw than I paid.

did you buy it off of ebay from some dude in Michigan? it sounds like the same thing the saw I bought on ebay from a guy in michigan is doing. at first it would not turn past about 9k, and as it has broken in it has climbed up to a little below 12k. mine had a AM cylinder and it seems to be the AM cylinder has ****** porting to start with.

go thru the carb again and make sure all is right, then inspect impulse and fuel lines and replace as needed. if its not getting impulse it will not flow enough fuel to run and if fuel line is cracked it will not pull fuel to run. also check fuel filter and make sure its not clogged up. what kind of compression does it have? make sure muffler screen is not stopped up. i get lots of saws and trimmers that come in not wanting to run out and all it is ,is the screen plugged up.

i'd be going back through that carb. could be as simple as a metering diaphragm/gasket mix up or metering lever set high. also leaking welch plugs. if the pump side can fuel enough to keep the RPM's down at 9k even with the high needle closed it's likely functioning correctly. i'd be going to the metering chamber and making sure everything is correct.

2 different things that I would look at.
1. Expand on the coil comment. Why? What made you mention the coil? Looks brand new?

2. The fact that the saw still ran with the H screw all the way in is a big flag, sounds like you need to go through the carb again...

Muffler screen is gone, as for the carb there was 2 different gaskets for the one side a rubber one and a felt gasket. It had the felt style in it before. Also how can I tell if the meter lever is set to high? As for the coil I was just saying that it is no a blue coil.

Make sure your spark plug gap is no greater than .025. An over gap plug will cause the same problem. I like .023. good luck.

I had a carb on a 2071 that did the same thing, went through it twice and didn't make difference. Swapped carbs and no problem after that. Also have an after market carb that works well that was not much more than a repair kit.

No I never. I put that other rubber gasket/pump part back in the carb but does same thing. Too me it seems like it's getting too much fuel because the plug is black and when the h screw is turned all the way in, it doesn't go above 9000rpm and runs really rough turned out 1 turn

Hello there did you ever figured out why your saw was running rich? I have the same problem with a Stihl 044 I just recently rebuilt & I tried everything you did but I had no luck.
