A couple of observations about my new 5100s. First, it's harder to start than a 20 year old stihl. The starter rope doesn't catch half the time and is generally very rough and jerky. It can't possibly last very long without trouble. Second, my 026's won't hold it a light to cut by. Third, the saw is narrow and won't ride in the back of my pickup without turning over. That's riding beside an 026. Fourth, and last, the bar cover that comes with it is for a 16" bar and is so narrow the chain has already ripped the bottom out of the bar cover and its probably only been on and off 4 or 5 times.

Something is amiss with the starter assembly. My 5100 is over a year old and works fine. Original cord shows no wear...though it is hard to pull over...but that's due to it having maybe 175 lbs compression, as the saw has been fully modified by Ed Heard. It will outcut a stock 044 in small wood.

Don't understand what your comment about the 026 is or how it relates to the 5100s....
Stock, the 5100 will walk all over the 260/026.

Your other two comments are irrelevant to the saw's performance. Overall, it's design and build quality are outstanding, imo.

I'll be buying another at some time, that's for sure.

Did you buy this saw new?? or was it a used saw that is new to you...

.

The 5100 is actually 20mm wider than the MS260 and 346xp, but it may of course not be as flat on its bottom - who really cares.........:hmm3grin2orange: :hmm3grin2orange: :notrolls2:

My observations of 5100s

1. one or two pulls with choke on and it will pop(not very loud, easy to miss the pop and then you'll flood it)
2.Saw has very good power.
3.It will easily outcut the ms260's that we have at work.
4.bar cover not ripped?;)
just my 2 cents:biggrinbounce2:

I just got the chance to use my PS-5100 for the first time this weekend. I didn't experience any of the same problems. Mine seems to start very easily and runs great. I did have to work over the carb limiter caps. It was way too lean to start off and I had to adjust about 1/2 turn further than the limiters would have allowed to get it right. The only other problem is that the oiler is much weaker than what I am used to with my Echos. With it turned up all the way, it is marginal. Just doesn't put out enough oil IMHO.

Thats strange....I got rid of my 346xp because it rolled over in the truck. My 5100 will smoke a MS440 too. It pulls hard because of 200psi. Give it a fair shake. It is "hit & miss" on the 5100s, it took two to get a good one.

It smokes a 440??? Maybe in 8 inch wood, but that's just chain speed...

200psi???? longevity may be an issue...

Am I missing something?

As for the narrowness and the saw not being able to stay up in the back of your p/up..............thats what saw cases are for!!!

I didn't even know that a saw rolling around in the back of your truck was criteria for the quality or usefulness of a saw! Get a freakin box and cut a slot in it for petes sake!

the 5100 is an excellent saw,but mine will not outcut a 440,is your 5100 stock?

Again, only chain speed... Small wood is a meaningless measure of a saw to saw performance, unless they are both small saws.

Take an 044 and put a 10 pin sprocket on (if it will fit), then cut some small wood...

Smart man there ole boy, your 100% correct. I got a 5100 and a 044. In "soft" small wood, 10 inch or less ,the 5100 may give the 044 a run for its money. Anything bigger and or harder that 044 is gone while the 5100 is still thinking what to do. I like the 5100 alot, mean little saw for no bigger than it is but I'm gonna have to sell it. Yup, it rolled over in the truck the other day, thats it, its gotta go,LOLOL

Tom I hope DaJewel did not get scratched... If you like I will take her in trade and send you a shiny new one :hmm3grin2orange: :hmm3grin2orange:

I'll buy you a beer on payday.

You too Tom! I'll take it off you hands. Can't have that saw rolling around like that.

The secret is to buy more saws... if you have enough, they can't roll, around! Then you need a bigger truck, and then more saw, and...;)

Well Scott I must admit I was very disappointed when the Jewel rolled over on its side. I saw it happen in the rear view mirror. I slammed on the breaks going down the interstate and had traffic backed up for miles. Several on lookers came up to see what was wrong. When they seen the Jewel had rolled over many offered to call 911 on their cell. I set it back up and it seemed to be ok so there was no need to take to the hospital,LOLOL

I've heard alot of complaints about all different brands of saws but I've never heard a complaint about any brand rolling over in a truck, something new everyday I guess.

Sadly since the Jewel survive the roll quite nicely and still runs like a hot rod Corvette I won't be needing a new shiny one just yet. I'll keep ya in mind though. Should it roll over again I may have to check out a "DEMO" 9010 to protect to the Jewel from future roll overs, hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
