I know the 262xp Husqvarna is lighter and has a little more power than the 630 Jonsered stock, but I would rather have the 630 myself. The 262xp is the best and biggest as it can be, but the 630 cylinder can be swapped out for a 272xp piston and cylinder. Muffler mod and a little woods porting and you can have the same weight putting out power that will run with 80cc class saws. Now thats good power to weight if you ask me. Rick!

Great score!

When it comes to Jonsereds I don't factor in need or whether I may have one of a particular model already. Instead I look at it as saving yet another J-red from potential oblivion. :D

Now you got me thinking about making that swap on a 630. :D

Looks great and for 50 bucks!!!

Here is probably the best $50 I ever spent, well that jumbo box of condoms was useful that week in Seattle, but I digress. Picked it up this morning, a 1983 Jonsered 630V (heated handle option). Overall in pretty good shape, the previous owner did some welding on the muffler for some reason and 2 cuts in the top cover. Lots of compression and came with an 18" powermatch bar. And it has some weird gas caps, anyone ever see these before?

Wild Welding

That is one nice rig but the muffler and bracket sure need replacing. That long burn hole in the top looks like it was done under exhaust pressure. As spike said it is just about on the seam of the muffler??? Must be burned/rusted out right there and at full bore the leakage must have burned/blown that hole in the cover. You never know the secret lives of used saws!!!! Hope your heated handles work, you may need them soon. I had the cookstove fired up last night!!! AUGUST!!!! Felt good though!!
Let us know how you do today if you get time to try that thing out.:cheers:

I certainly don't need another 630, but for $50 it is hard to turn down.

Hey PB, it may be another 630, but a least it's a differment model 630. I've been waiting for a 670 Champ Deluxe to come along for a long time. When I bought my first new saw in 1998, they had a 1997 Champ Deluxe calling to me, but with my limited funds I had to leave it there. I've been looking ever since. I am "red" with envy over your 630V.

I am going to use that same excuse to keep it. I originally said I won't own doubles, part saws, but not doubles. I will have to rethink that strategy and what really constitutes the same model. ;)

I will keep my eyes open for the deluxe too. Was there anything different about it compared to the regular champ?

Well I thought I would get to work on it today, but the fiancee actually has a day off today so not sure now. She has been working 14+ hour days for the past 2 weeks getting ready for the students to come back. If I get a chance I am going to try to take the muffler off and inspect it and check out the p&c while I am at it.

You had the stove going already?! It looks like it will be nicer out today, already warmer. :)

Yep, gotta take care of your home life even before saws!!! I get called on that quite often myself.

The wife and daughter were a little chilly last night so I fired up the kitchen cook stove and took the dampness out. That made them happy which in turn made me happy!! NO whining!! We have a nice little Jotul 505 sweet little cook stove but is a bit of a pain to cut for. It takes 12" wood and needs to be split rather fine but is great to cook on and puts out a goodly amount of heat. It is sized just right for our smallish kitchen.

You'll get some time with that 630. That's one of the nice things about saws they are very patient and don't :censored:tch!!! Good luck!

Had a chance to play with it this evening. The "V" option works for sure, and the p&c are spotless. It has 2 thin rings and has 175 psi.

Spike was right about the muffler, the previous owner didn't put it back together correctly when he did the welding. The baffle was in crooked, preventing the 2 halves from matching up properly. Smoked like an SOB, must have 32:1 in the damn thing. The carb is a mess, looked like the guy couldn't sharpen a chain and that is obvious with the 2 spare chains that came with it. Fine dust in the carb area and the carb itself. It has a sporatic idle, and the fine dust is probably the culprit. I have a carb kit here, so it will get cleaned and rebuilt soon.

It has a nearly brand new 20" powermatch bar, and the chain was dull. I think i put the first sharpening on the chain. Those caps are crap, the oil one will spin and spin with any amount of force, and the fuel cap leaks. Need to replace those.

Also I notice that on the top cover, there was an indentation for a label. I wonder if this indentation is an indicator of the top cover. Maybe the later ones didn't have it, and the different spacing as well?

Well ya

Get what ya pay for!! I'm glad the heated handles work as they are hard to replace but the muffler and fuel/oil caps are easy to come by and perhaps a good used top cover. Still and all it's a good deal for the price you paid.
Dandrikop has the piston with two rings that is not the thin ring setup. It's the regular 1.5MM rings if you need it . But it sounds like more cosmetic and bolt on stuff is all you need. Still a super deal :cheers:!!!!!!!

P.B.; do you have a 670? I was given one and I have not run any of the Jonsereds that I have here. Would it be more like a 272 Husky? Don`t have enough time to start and run all the saws piled up around here.

Indeed a great deal! I am not complaining in the least bit, it is in pretty good condition for being 26 years old. Holy crap I am older than the saw. I was a year old when this thing was made.

Definitely cosmetic, but the muffler will need to be replaced. Maybe I can find a decent top cover like you mentioned. This thing is a strong runner, and definitely has seen more abuse from the owner than from the wood.

The piston is spotless, maybe if we get together soon I can bring it down to show you. When it was running, smoke was rolling out of both the holes in the top cover. Nearly choked me to death..

No Jerry, I don't have a 670. I think it would run a little bit less than the 272, as it is smaller in displacement. Sounds like you are up to your elbows in saws.

If you need to unload any JReds let me know. ;)

Covers

My 630 Super II has in indentation as well and that would be a later saw I assume. By spacing I assume you are talking about the bolts that hold the cover on?? I think they are all the same but not positive. I've been looking for a better cover than I have and also need the air filter cover. There does not appear to much difference in the covers until you get to the 670 whose air filter cover is a bit taller than the others, but fits to the same cyl cover.

Spike mentioned the top covers have a different bolt spacing on the rear, and it is visible on some of the covers on Ebay. The bolt is closer to the center of the saw, instead of the muffler. That pretty much shoots my idea about the covers. The 670 cover will work, but it is taller. You could also put a heavier 670 filter on it with the taller cover.

OK; now I remember, the Jreds are backwards in the model numbers, a 670 is 67 cc or there abouts. Probably more like the Husky 266 that I have and don`t use either.
