You guys have been pulling my leg for so long. I was learning how to open up a muffler the right amount for better flow, and then the Amish showed me how it is really done.

Everytime that those guys come in and i have one of my ported saws on the bench they just sit there and stare at it. So it probably my falt. They just don't have a clue about real power...

saws

They all started out with 066, still wanted more power. Blew those up in 6 months (What air filter?).
I have 1 guy that finally figured out a 460 will get the job done at less cost. HE even sprung for a vented front cover and had me adjust it correctly.
But the learning curve was very slow.

Innovating lot

I've had some dealings with the Amish,of which I speak no disrespect. One such dealing was the computer cabinet ,of which I am writing this post. When I arrived at Mr Yoders store,it was like something out of a picture book.Immaculate lawn, grounds, etc. The store, was gas-lite,but Mrs.Yoder, was using a cell phone, hmm.I had made arraingements,to have it delivere d[ 50 miles from here].Mr Yoder, had an enclosed trailrer, but had to hire a driver, with a truck. He asked,if $50.,would be out of line.I of course said that would be fine.We they arrived, there were 4 strapping young men that moved it in the house[ over 700 lbs,all I had to do,was write the check.I was in the garage, writing the check, and Mr yoder, was eye balling my wife's Caddy. He remarked,as to the year, the engine, etc.I replied, about his knowledge,of the car.He said, with a twinkle in his eye,"just because I can't own one, doesn't mean I don't like them".How about that? :)

Very Nice cabinet. I have a bedroom suite made by the Amish and it is rock solid.

No,it was $50.,for the delivery.About 3 g's for the cabinet.It's only money,I never had a problem making more,nor did I ever see a Brinks truck in funeral procession. :)

Lots of Amish up around my mother's home town of Fredrick-
town Ohio. They come to Ky. to buy horses. The young
Amish boys like to buy thoroughbreds to pull their buggys,
kind of their version of a hot-rod.

Back to the 029, had a guy bring one back wanting
warranty, he only had it a few months. It was totally shot,
bearings out, looked like it had been dropped, etc.....
He wanted a replacement, as it was so new. He cuts cedar
trees for a living. I looked at the air filter, it was riddled
with large holes. When I showed it to him, he said proudly,
"I did that, it made it run a whole lot better!" "Did it with
my screwdriver"

700 lbs.? The cabinet sure doesn't look that heavy. It takes a pretty big piano to weigh 700 lbs., and they're filled with a lot of metal strings.

Come and lift it some time, then tell me how much it weighs. :) That was the shipping weight, plus the tare, from Wisc.,where it was made[ solid red oak,no plywood etc.]Fish, mentioned Fredricktown Ohio,I was born there, how about that.Back then[when I was born,Stihl was not a familiar name ] :)

There is a group of Amish or Menanite that come to our antique saw contest in Baraboo WI every year. They get there early, and stay late. They watch the whole show with great interest, but don't have much to say. You can see them as the front row of spectators, sitting down. They are excellent cabinet makers. We had an amish man make our cabinets for our new house and the quality is way beyond the best Merilat, and the price is less. They are heavy, solid, and beautiful.

As I understand it,the elders of the area make this rules regarding what is an acceptable use,of technoligy.I have seen Amish machine shops where the machinery was driven from air motors .I have heard, but not seen of the use of line shafts, with a diesel for power.Several years ago ,I bought a Bridgeport mill,in Huntsville Ohio. While I was loading the mill on my trailer,an Amish man went by with a horse and wagon with 4 steel drums.I asked the guy I bought the mill from, what's up with that.He replied that every Saturday the man came for diesel fuel for his generator. All I could do,was to scratch my head.I would venture to say,if it was acceptable with the order, and given enough time, that these folks could become as good of repairmen on Stihl or any other saw,as about anyone. As far as blowing holes in the muffler or defeating the air cleaner,I have 4 saws, not mine, that suffer from the same fate,in my shop.Folks do a lot of dumb things do to the fact of being ignorent of basic operation of machinery. It's too bad, costs them a lot of money.

As Al is indicating-What is permitted among the Amish varies between Ordenungs. In some Ordenungs ownership of automobiles is permitted-with rules about brand, colors and features. Whether "liberal" or "conservative" the Amish have forsworn things which are frivolous or ostentatious.

New Holland used to make a square baler powered by a V-4 Wisconsin so they could pull it with their horses. I don't know the Amish but they sound similar to the Hutterites we know. They are excellent farmers but create a lot of resentment for their secretive ways and wealth.

This is all very interesting .I live in an area, that is mostly Old order German Baptist, and Old order Mennonite .A good friend of my wife, who is German Baptist,is not allowed to own a tv,radio,or computer, she can and does, use a computer,at the pubic library. There is a group,I think in Iowa, that are the most successful farmers in the world .They educate thier children, and use the most modern devices, including computers, for thier buisiness operations, but don't use them,as we do,in a casual way,for entertainment, etc. To each his own,I guess.
