Hey Thall:

I remember something about a guy that recently purchased a 36" bar and thought that he got a heck of a deal. Heck, he even posted a bunch of pictures of it!

Paid something like $50 for it and pointed out how his preferred dealer had it marked for something like $95 or some crazy high price.

Was that bar way over-priced in the first place or did it lose a lot of value just hanging around on his dealer's wall? Or both?

.

lol, I'm not sure I recall all that, seems alot gets posted on here by someone that I see no point in recalling, lololol

If it's a 36 inch Stihl bar, $50 is great deal , no matter what price tag it had on it! Basically dealer cost...

Nooooo, It wasn't a Stihl bar. "That guy" probably wouldn't take one for free. No, it was a Husqvarna bar...

opps, my bad.... I had flushed all the neural links to the sap, so I didn't corealte... If it was a Stihl bar, and he paid FULL List for it, about $75 would walk it home. But who pays full list?

Wonder what that chain cost?

Four Paws you didn't read my post very close. If you look again I said I gave the fire company 15% off BUT some of that comes back from Stihl. Meaning Stihl is going to give me back some of that 15%. As far as mark up in general goes the mark up on Stihl is no higher than Husky, in fact it may well be less. Baileys offers good prices, no doubt about that but ask Baileys if they pay the same price for their stock as a small time Husky dealer, hmmmm. Baileys is a huge outfit and no doubt they get good prices because of how much they buy. They can afford to pass on those savings, a small time dealer cannot. As for price in general we have a small wooden sign that hangs in the building. It says this: We Know Others Sell For Less And Thats Ok, They Know And We Know What Their Stuff Is Worth.
Note as well you and that Shindiawa sign there. Go price trimmers cc for cc verses Stihl and tell me who is higher. Talk about overprice, theres a prime example. A 25cc 4 stroke Shindiawa cost as much as a 31cc 4 stroke Stihl and theres no comparsion in power, the Stihl kills it. So much for overprice, your a glutting for your own punishment..........

Perhaps my question came across wrong. I am NOT trying to start a pissing match or a brand loyalty debate! I appreciate the knowledge and expertise on this site and don't want to make any enemies! It would just be nice (for me) to know what kind of mark-up I can expect when I walk into a shop - just to use as a baseline for negotiations. I know everyone needs to make money! Making 10% isn't much when you consider overhead. Let's face it, shops get by not on sales, but service! And, for a dealer to make a guy feel warm and fuzzy with a free set of files, or a free hat - that is what keeps the business coming back and costs the shop owner next to nothing. Generally, the smaller the item, the larger the mark-up, and giving away a "freebie" translates into an 'advertising' or 'marketing' write-off come tax time! I now drive almost 50 miles to go to a dealer that treats me well - you can't put a price on good service!

Some on here know that I personally have a beef with Stihl NW, but with that said I love the local dealers. They are not the ones gouging. Top tier dealers only get 40% mark up on parts and 25% on saws. That is slim for any one other than a large volume dealer. Most will make their money on service. And that my sappy little kick pupet is what makes the local dealers really cool to work with.

Well maybe I did take ya wrong. I got the impression you felt Stihl was overpriced when cc for cc and class of machine they are right in line price wise with everyone else. Some abit cheaper, some a tad more meaning it rounds out. Some people like Sap on here think 10% above cost is a helluva profit. Thats bull and he should know since we all know he's a crook himself selling homemade tomahawks for as much as 900.00 and having maybe at most 40.00 worth of material in them. His time isn't worth another 850.00. So I show him no mercy. Some think saws are marked up 30/40/50 percent when none are marked over 25, thats a fact, most are marked up even less. There is very little bargining room on saws and even less on trimmers. The accessories have mark up but the units do not. That should give you some idea the answer your seeking. Welcome to the site, sorry for taking ya wrong. As for you Sap and I know you read all the Stihl threads, I got your discount hanging..

Hey Four Paws,

Don't let these nimrods steer you away from Stihl. It's highly unlikely the observed personality disorders are the result of chain saw use.:p

Dan

Which nimrods are trying to steer him from Stihl Dan??

Yeah, I noticed that too.
I get ripped off every time I go to my local dealer.
I buy stuff and when I get the receipt, I notice that I am charged less than the sticker price!!!! I HATE getting ripped off like that!

I have noticed that two..When my order comes in this week I'll have to really look at the slip to make sure they dont under charge me again..I seem to get a good price from all the dealers in my area....

Oh what a pretty picture. That's a 36" 3/8 .063 by the way.

I would agree that if you do switch to 3/8, then stick to .063 (or .058), not .050

LOL>..Sap got an oddball size bar(which is why the owner had to sell it for $50.) Now hes the expert on chain gauge!!!!

Absoluetly nothing wrong with 36" of 50 gauge chain.

Run

If it came out of Sap's mouth, stop and run the other way. I run a 32" bar with 3/8 .050 chain. I only run .050 on all my stuff from 10" to 32". Dont see any need for the extra beef and weight IMO.

Well, happened again. I took a couple 28" chains to have 1 driver removed from each. It seems that the GB 28" bar is a hair shorter than a Stihl wide nose, anyway...

I also get a set of dawgs, fuel filter, C-clip for the clutch....and he wont charge me for the labor on the chains!!! If he doesnt start overcharging me, Im going to have to switch over to Husky.

BUT WAIT....He sells Husky too, so I guess Im stuck with him.

Sorry Thall, I have the m231 powerhead and most attachments, yes they are VERY expensive BUT MAN ARE THEY WORTH IT!!!!! I've run JD's old Homies, Huskies and Stihls, keep em all, I want my Shinie!!!!!!!!!! And I will gladley pay for it! I like my Stihl and husky saws, but if Shindiawa ever started to build an up to date saw I would be hard pressed to not buy it, but the saws they have now seem to leave a lot to be desired:mad:

You mean you got another deal at the Stihl dealer, no way, thats impossible. How dare that dealer keep on treating you like that. If I was you I wouldn't not stand for it, I'd never go back. In fact I would call Stihl Inc. and tell them how good this dealer is treating you, they will fix his butt:hmm3grin2orange: :hmm3grin2orange:

Shoot I got no issues with whatever brand anyone decides to use. Seems though somehow this thread was accusing Stihl of being out of line on prices when they are not, they are in line with other brands. Ya like ya Shinies , shoot cool with me. I am glad to see your honest and admit they are costly but in all most all major brands price wise are in the ball park. We have a old Shindiawa saw we use in the yard, great saw, not knocking your Shinie's at all. I was just clearing up some price issues that sorta leaned one way..........

Ya know Andy speaking of that I had a customer come in today trying his damnest to jew me down on a MS660. He wasn't asking 50.00 or 75.00 off but 100.00's off the list price. I knew soon as he started talking 100.00's he and I were both wasting our time. Instead of trying to talk him up and him talk me down to a medium we both could live with here's what I did. I said it sells for 1039.95. For 970.00 its yours. He just looked at me. I said now you can go shopping for a better price somewhere else and thats fine. However if you come back and want it the price is going to be 1039.95. Hard ball jewing requires hard ball tatics. I don't need nor put up with bull like that. Hell for what he wanted to give for the saw he would be paying less than we did for it. Customers like that are a waste of time and I don't waste time on them. You are very correct, "SOME" just don't understand but are shown where the door is,politely of course,lol...
