Very strange

Very strange to me in all the years I have rolled saws out the door I have never , not one single time, had one customer ask about using veggi oil as bar oil. Not once. I too have ran saws well over 30 years and never once thought about how much I'm hurting the earth. I would assume according to this thread a can of pure lard spooned into the oil tank would be suitable once it melts down from the heat of the saw, so much for the bar and chain. I know for certain without anti wear additives in bar oil the sales of bars and chains would sky rocket. Is there any anti wear additives in veggie oil, if so I can't seem to find it in writing on the bottle. Much as I like selling bars and chains I will remain honest and tell anyone to use what the saw requires, not what the popcorn pan requires.............

Great, and I though it was bad servicing saws that had used engine oil in them as bad, and now I have to deal with rotting pig or beef fat!

There will most certainly be an extra fee for that!:monkey:

If I recall, Tom Dunlap reported that he hasn't had abnormal wear problems since switching. Some people don't like the smell of oily clothes.

Well good for Mr.Dunlap. I will continue to go by the book though untill someone asks for another type of bar oil other than bar oil. That question has never been put to me and untill it is I'll say use bar oil. This idea of veggi oil is a new one to me and if it works then fine but I'll stick with those who wrote the book on their product, not Crisco...

Seems to me the smell of the exhaust overpowers the smell of bar oil. To think of it, I don't think bar oil has an odor.....does it? I guess I should pay more attention.

Its interesting.....so many different opinions, and I don't think any of them are wrong. Its when the insinuation that those who do something different than others are "dupes" or "dumb" or "misinformed" where it becomes a pissing match. I say if the Vegi oil, Corn oil, Soy oil, Used motor oil is working for you...run with it. Its asinine, however, to think less of those who do not follow in your footsteps.

Ive been useing Tractor Supply bar oil for a lot of years now. Comes in a black jug and has plenty of tack. It has always worked good for me and is four bucks and change a gallon. Thats the part I like best.

I've seen that over at TS before. Never tried it but for 4.00 a gallon thats a dayummm good buy. I like TS, they carry alot of farm stuff in that store, stuff for us country boys................

Stihl oil here is $9.50 a gallon.
Echo is $8.00
Other saw brands range from $7.00-10.00.
Store brands range from $3.00-6.00.
Some bar oils seem to smell more than others. The wife dislikes the smell of them all, including seed oils. I might try some animal fats as I like the smell of burgers and bacon. Might even include some cheese. That way the dog will follow me home for sure.
So many opinions and so little facts. Free speech is a geat thing.

lolololololol, good one. Beware, some woods have bears in them. You taking a saw in the woods smelling like a big Mac burger might get you more than you bargined for,lol

That is true that is why I brought the big chainsaw with the really long bar. As bears still have not evolved a saw functional thumb or good credit at the saw shop it should be a relatively one sided duel. I will use seed oil so as I can cook and serve my opponent after-wards. Torching a 42" or 50" chain might be worth it. I think my chaps said they were "bear resistant".:D

I thought it had something to do with BARE RESISTANT. Something about not baring your ass to the world when consuming lots of beer...

WHEW!!! Amazing.

I cant believe someone is worried about the bar oil spit off a chain and bar, yet has no qualms about firing up ANY internal combustion engine. Its all about the convenience of the user, plain and simple.

As for Global Warming...I too, would like to know how the previous Ice Ages occurred without any of the current mass polluting devices available.

EDIT: I use the Stihl oil....Same price as the oil at TSC, HD, and Wal Mart. Havent tried any Bio oil, or veggie oil, so I cant comment on those. Regualr oil works for me, so if its not broken.......... I would say, though, I would have no problems using a Bio Oil if it was requested.

I don't get it.
In this thread:
http://www.arboristsite.com/showthread.php?t=34647
you go on and on and on about all the protective measures meant to provide a barrier for the environment from pollution at the landfill where you work, but you don't see anything wrong with spewing bar oil all over the place when using a chainsaw?

Would you let me come into your landfill and dump a gallon of bar oil on the ground? How about a half gallon? How about a quart? A pint? A tablespoon? How much bar oil exactly would you allow me to dump on the ground there? It's protected by your 'containment system', so where's the problem?

Jesus, man. "Amazing" is right.

We Have Oil Recycle

If it really concerns you you are welcome to come to Va and dump all the oil you want at the landfill, we have oil recycle at the landfill, if not you can dump it in Ca, we really don't care, amazing I know...........

What about Pitch?

Hey THALL...you sell some STIHL brand bar & chain oil and I hear that each lubricant comes with a smile...:D
Is it as good as the line of saws? What kind of vegetable oils are used in the BIO product? Which would you recommend?

STIHL Bar and Chain Oil is formulated to adhere to the bar and chain, and to reduce wear. Special agents in the oil formulation help keep sap and pitch from clinging to the bar and chain.

STIHL BioPlus™ oil is made with a vegetable Oil Base. This means that the oil is less harmful to humans, animals, micro-organisms and plants.

You just have to run some petroleum oil through the saw before storage.

Why? Gummy deposits? "Storage" means, what? 30 days? A couple of days? A couple of months?

I plan to switch once I've used up my current stock. Canola is cheap, and oddly enough, I DON'T like spewing petrochemicals all over my property.
