What is the longest bar I can put on this saw? Any ideas and thoughts would be great. Thanks

The longest bar Stihl makes with that mount is currently 36".  You could probably find one longer made by someone else.

Cannon Bar Works will make one just about any length. The saw is 41.6 cc. 2.8 hp. Stihl recommends 16-20" and using the Oregon bar selector guide - the longest listed is 20".

Yes, the longer the bar, the more the saw slows down.

a 20 is the longest bar an 024 should pull, anything longer and you'd have no real power. a 16-18" bar is almost ideal for such a size saw. just keep the chain sharp and the saw will keep you happy.

I have a 024 Super with a 16 inch bar and chain combo. I don't think I would put anything bigger on this saw. Don't get me wrong, it is a good saw, but I think with anything larger than a 16 on it, would make it a frustrating outing.

Longest Bar?

16" for sure on the 024. If it were your only saw you could perhaps have a longer spare bar. These little saws are a joy to use 16". Any longer and you'll continually be thinking of when will you get around to replacing it.

Recent pic?

Hey Toneman:
.
Yes, it is. Last Fall. Hard to believe this was my main 'on-the-ground' limbing saw for years. (I retired my 031 not long after I got this 024 back in the early 80's) Two years ago from all the talk of 026's here in the forum, I had to try the 026. I now have a couple of 026's. Pretty much the same weight but more power. So, the 024 is now retired. Before I put it up, I cleaned it up really good and put a new bar, chain, sproket, etc. Got it out and used it on a job a couple of weeks ago just to make certain she still runs. Ran great!

Mais non, Many, Many hours

Once I got rid of my 031 & 051, I climbed with my dual trigger homelite and had this 024 and an 038. I ran the 038 with a 25" bar ... I should have been running with a 20" on the 038, as it wasn't balanced right and seemed heavy. (unlike my 440 w/20" now, which I can't seem to put down!). So, I pretty much only used the 038 to buck with. Every thing else was cut with the 024. Hard to say, how much it's cut as I have been in and out of this work. But that little saw has cut up hundreds and hundreds of trees of all sizes. (that's the third bar... and a bar generally lasts me forever)
No one else uses my saws and I always try to clean and service them before putting them up.
Hey, you take care of your stuff, and it'll take care of you!

Wow buckduck, that saw does look amazing. I too take care of my stuff, and clean and polish, yes plastic polish, my saws after I use them. I'm not anal about them, but do clean and shine them up to keep them looking nice and not discoloring.

Take care all,
Jeff

here is a 024 with a 16" .325 and 7 spur. it is not a real power house or pro model. make it last with a similar set-up. maybe up to 18" would be okay. keep the spur at 7 and keep the chain sharp. marty
