ya well move to canada then, tree work slowed down a bit through the winter as it normally does but we were still working 28-35 hrs in january-febuary. If you can't get work from your employer go out on your own time when you should be working and do side jobs, you can't sit on the couch hoping your gonna get called into work, thats what I do when it slows down.

oh definitly i dont just sit around i pull out the saws and start buckin firewood, but not many people are buying firewood right now so im in a pretty tight spot, spend a lot of time workin and puttin up wood and no money coming in. fire season right now so im limited in how much i can run my saw. id love to be up there working right now. anyway im almost to the point right now where its costing me money to cut firewood (i know in a few months my hard work will pay off) but its tought right now.

if you're working lots the company's obviously making money still, regardless of how poor it is for the other guys, especially stateside... you should deserve a raise as long as you're making them money....the company is using the economy as threat...along with all the other 'you should be lucky to have a jobs' posts...$20/hr here in canada isn't the same as in the states...the cost of living is a lot cheaper there and less taxes get taken off your pay... personally i wouldn climb for that anymore, but then again you get bennies and steady work... don't take any crap from all the other guys shouting you down...good luck man

As an employer, I must admit: I don't give raises to folks because they are great workers, or making me lots of money.

My motive is profit, and I would prefer to keep it all for myself.

Unfortunately, since I think it is important to have motivated, valuable employees, I try to give them raises as needed to prevent the good ones from finding a better job elsewhere.

If the job market in your area says that they can replace you with a hungrier, harder working employee, then you can probably abandon hope of getting a raise. Of course the best way to get a raise it to BE irreplaceable, and then seem likely to go elsewhere for a better job.
