I was mostly running ported 372's and non ported 385's at the time. I did have a stock Ms440 with a dual port muffler as well as a stock muffler modded 372.
I am not saying the 7900 was a turd, it clearly wasn't. It just wasn't overwhelmingly faster than a muffler modded stock 372 and certainly wasn't faster than my ported 372's.
I love that saw the low vibes alone make it a pleasure to operate.
 
I agree Wolfy , have owned two 7900 & a 7910 . Stock they perform very well within their class . Their AV system is the smoothest I have ever witnessed . However , basic muffler mod or ported they are world class performers and is where they get the name within performance that Ben alludes . I have owned or own ms-660 or 575 xp saws . Some were marginally faster or slower in the cut , stock , however neither handle better or smoother than my Dolkitas . All my 7900 or 7910 eventually became muffler modded (cat delete) or fully woods ported . Then , they became world class performers , that what perhaps Ben experienced in 3rd party water cooler conversations . I know my new 7900 XD ( full wrap & canister air filter with sock prefilter) out of the box was a joke until I removed the cat in the muffler & sock prefilter & retuned with my tach . after a full tank of Shell 91 ultra & 40:1 Red Armor break in . Kevin has agreed to do his renowned porting on it this spring for me that I know will provide a fun filled & reliable performer for some of my 30" plus , White pine blow downs out at camp . lol. Anyhow Ben will fill you in with real world comparison since he has owned more than a few good hardwood saws and is quite right in the rinky dink support they received within the US & Canada unfortunately !
The 7900 I had was a very early saw before they went to two tone plastics and well before Makita was involved. The muffler did not have cats. I do believe there were some updates done to the 7900 early on, but can't recall what they where.
To be honest, going by memory I only cut full time with my 7900 for a few months before it went down for a few months waiting on parts. Once back up and running I ran it for a few more months and then proceeded to crunch it with a skidder. After waiting for several more months for a rear handle/tank and handle bar I put it back together and sold it. It just wasn't workable to wait on parts for months ever time something happened.
For your needs I assume the Dolmars will work great and especially after Kevin does his magic. He does really good work and is honest as can be.

As I got older low vibration is something I've grown to appreciate. But even back in the era I discussed above the spring AV saws where way better than rubber mount Stihls of that era. Looking back on it Stihls where pretty much antiquated garbage compared to Huskys.

Well my 044 served me well it was tough and cut good but vibrated too much. I still have 3 of those on the shelf. I wouldnt complain about its power.

Nothing messes me up worse than raw Diesel fumes when operating old machinery .

A few weeks ago we were doing some trouble shooting on a large compressor that was located right next to a rail road siding complete with idling locomotive. The three of us involved were all sick after a few hours from the damn fumes. Idling diesels don't burn to clean in sub zero temps!
 
Thats pretty well what I said in summary within poor distributorship & dealership representation within North America . As for price point every Dolkita I have owned was $300-$500 cheaper than the competition Husquarna or Stihl offered in the same saw class here in the Great White North . Perhaps not the same economic advantage South of the border . Yes , again on the parts sourcing back in the day with the non existent dealer support network . Today over nite parts availability is the norm here . However your obviously correct , none of the German saws ever made a scratch on the North American Commercial Market for the reasons you have indicated . It's been a two horse race pretty much since the early 80's within any serious logging & arborist sector conversation . P.S. Reminds me of the auto sector actually lol. Back in the day I had Camero Z28 & Firebird Trans-Am . 427 & 455 Big blocks . Then finally bought a 1969 Porche & BMW . Day & nite difference in performance & handling & design philosophy's & technology mission statements . Much like what the Japaneese did to the bike market early in the 60's when the British & American big twins ruled the streets . Today unfortunately North American auto industry is a complete joke , Kia & Hyundia rule the small car market & Nissian & Toyota will soon capture the truck market . Pretty sad , sorry for my rant brother !
Nissan and Toyota still don't make a real 3/4 or 1 ton pickup. When they do then I'll agree. My brother's 18 titian is solidly in the 1/2 ton market and even then any new 1/2 ton domestic will out tow it. It's sad really it's a nice truck and has good power, but even my empty deck over puts the rear on its bump stops.

I'm the opposite, gas fumes just kill me. Don't mind diesel near as much. Actually the newer stuff with dpf/doc is much worse then the smoke dragons of old.

I was referring to residential usage Sean , however give the Japanese or now the Chinese time . 3/4 or 1 ton Commercial lines ups will be their next niche to explore . The Nissian 5 litre Cummins in the Titan was just test batch within North America , more or less the tip of the iceberg brother !

I would rather we within North America produce World Class vehicles again . So tired of everything of quality being produced by our former & future enemies across the big pond . My Son purchased a 2018 Dodge Hemi 1/2 Ton his biggest disappointment in a new vehicle ever brother !

Yeah the diesel particulate really does not dissipate well in colder weather . The truckers protest recently within Ottawa caused high levels of diesel emmissions to accumulate within the city while 100' s of idling tricks sat still outside the Parliament building district . The emergency rooms were full of effected citizens , who lived there . So sad really !

Toyota had a 1 ton prototype up and running complete with a diesel engine. They pulled the plug on it in after the financial crisis of 2008.
I've owned quit a few Dodge and GM trucks. The last rig I bought was a Toyota Tacoma. The differance in long-term reliability is astounding. My current Tacoma was purchased new in 2012. I've done nothing besides tires, brakes and a serpentine belt in that time. It has over 200k on the clock and it has been pounded On. Front end is still tight despite the abuse I have subjected it to.

Toyota 1/2 tons are made exclusively in Texas. The Tacoma is made in Texas and MX. Both have a a NA part content higher than a GM truck.

We tried both methods BEFORE taking the carb off - no good

We tried to Reset again After New Solenoid installed = no good

Could be:
a.) fuel line
b.) air leak elswhere
c.) Carb
d.) MTronics itself

Well it is at the Dealer now and we'll find out no later then Tuesday.

If the saw dies at more than half throttle, how did you complete the recalibration? It has to be ran at full throttle for 30 seconds.

We were able to complete the recalibration three times before the saw degraded to that point.

My son ran the saw without ever cleaning the air filter and he used ethanol fuel which is known for carb problems.
