The Husky 288 is 88cc's, the last two digits denote the cc's on Husky saws, and J-reds I believe

I would think about any of the2 series Huskies would be a place to start. If you want to get stupid, I'd talk some more to RBW and find a 100cc Homie, or old Mac and see what can be done!

i will look at that 910e on saturday and if that doesnt pan out i may send my muffler on the 7900 out to get modded or something..

I have always been facinated with the 038 magnum (I know Stihl), I hear you get great gains from them!!

Look at the old Partners, some love them, I don't know anything about them. The other thing I have not seen mentioned, is parts availability. I you mod the cylinder on one of these old saws and bone it, good luck finding a replacement!!! Just food for thought!

The question as to why the Homelite 540 is a good saw is answered because it was designed and or built by Solo. It was also called by another number and I think it was a 8800 but can't really remember. Most Homelites are heavy for their power output but this series was a good saw. It was just too late in the process to keep Homelite afloat. Mike

Why the 540 out of the rest of their lineup from that era?

Wow they made other saws.....

Is homelite a good saw to buy?

I think someone should start a site just for this type of question.

No clue...maybe tonka?

and see what can be done!

These saws would just stretch his arms out, they would go from skinny to looking like Buggy whips in a few hours running.

Rupe, I thought this was the answer, but I wansnt sure. When I look at modding somethoing for power weight would be a secondary concern, especially with the saws from this era.

But thats just me.

How many CC is the 540?

:ices_rofl: That's a good one! I doubt the Stihl lovers will ever invest the time to look though. Its a pity what they're missing out on.

And yes, the 540 and 8800 are practically identical. A few minor differences like the muffler construction, but pretty much the same saw. From what I've heard regarding 540s tending to run hot, I'm not sure this would be a saw that would take well to mods. It very likely is already putting out near its limits in regards to the power it can reliably produce. Please take this statement as only my opinion, I have no solid proof to confirm this.

As for Homelites of this era that would be good candidates, saws like the 450,550,650,750 seem to be a better pick. The 650 and 750 especially have a very solid bottom end with good bearings so they should handle increases without self-distructing, however you'e into the 100cc range now. Once again, take these words as one persons opinion. I have personally never modded one of these or any other saw, but I have worked (actually played) with all of these.

Muffler cap for a Stihl 038 mag II

Hey Rupedoggy do you have any muffler for a stihl 038Mag II? Mine vibrated off and cracked the connection points. It was a dual ported muffler.

I had a partner P85 that I picked up real reasonable. I muffler modded it with great results. It was a bit heavy but a fun saw to cut with. It certainly had it's own sound and feel. It would bury a 24" bar with no problem. Theres something more appealing about oddball or not as common saws. Keeping the costs down makes it easier and justifies the next prodject,(at least in my mind).
