Murph yeah I follow this site...for a long time. I know my way around saws and built every saw I have from garbage to perfect working machines. So relax. I port my own mufflers, but engine porting is not something I have experience with. So I haven't followed the porting links. The ones ive read didn't answer my questions. So if it's alright with you, I'll ask my questions.

 Well guys, you tried.

OP, you already have all the information you need to make an informed choice. Use the Search function, read a few posts, talk to the builders yourself if you want to.
With the mechanical background that you claim to have I'm sure you'll be able to pick one that suits your need.

We have some decent saw builders on AS. Most of them are sponsors, too. But two of the best saw builders I've ever seen aren't here. They don't advertise and they don't have websites. They don't need them.

I've asked them to look at this place and they did. Both of them declined to become involved, mostly because of the constant bickering, ankle biting, and newbies arguing with people who know more than they do.

They have all the work they can handle, all through word of mouth advertising and their good reputations. They build saws for loggers and don't mess with dime store play saws. Gotta respect that.
Can you share who the 2 best are you refer to so we can know? Then we have an even more complete list! Unless of course they prefer to get all business through reference and prefer not to be listed in a post on this forum for some reason.

The answer is no. A polite no but a definite one. Like I said, they'd rather not be involved in the AS Flying Circus.
They both work in saw shops and prefer to deal with loggers. They seem to be happy with that arrangement and neither one seems to lack any work. It's their choice and I'll not quarrel with it. Besides which I don't want either one of them going upside my head with a wrench the next time I see them.
The firewood cutters and other assorted weekend warriors on AS already have a good selection of guys that can make their saw the fastest cookie cutter on the block. What else could you want?

Asking people on here what they think about porting is part of the research...maybe some guys on here were born with a ported saw up their a@@ but some of us weren't, and want to have discussion about it and hear helpful opinions. If you need to have the answer before you can ask the question, what's the point? And if the thread is beneath you, don't waste time responding to it with negative bullsh@@.

Is Terry still around? I emailed twice last week about mailing a saw and haven't heard back.

Don't misread me. Everything I'm saying is with a smile On my face. This is a forum for questions and discussions right? So why bust balls if someone has a question? It defeats the whole purpose. You knock on my door and tell me you are lost and not from here, I'm not slamming the door in your face and telling you to buy a map, or roll my eyes because I know and you don't. Just help people out , what's so hard about that?

being a member since Tuesday and spewing that attitude ,you might as well go to sawhawgs because you wont be getting no answers here because of the ignore button and you are throwing a red flag to every builder on this site.

Careful Gary, I think it's bush ape in disguise, out lookin for a fight!;)

The real question you should ask about saw mods is do you want a pop-up or a cut squish? Different builders use one or the other to compensate for raising the compression by cutting the base of the cylinder and allowing for piston clearance at TDC. There have been many AS builder thread wars over these two different options that have spilled over to many other forums. As for which method is better, the jury is still out. Once you decide what type of build you want and how extreme, then find a builder that does good work and comes with a reliable reputation. I have run a lot of ported saws, and some scream while others are turds. I do not recommend one builder over any others. I am partial to TreeMonkey of late though, as he comes with good references (including Randy's) and is currently recovering from a heart attack. Hopefully he will be back in business building saws again and soon.

Also an alternative: as the best builders get hopelessly booked up and if as you say you can do things like muffler mods, you can pull, ship and get the jug (and/or slug) turned by one of the better builders and do the rest yourself.

Ah, the Regurgitated Brush Ape... in all his glory. Seems like a different sort here though.

And on that topic, what ever happened to Talon of AS old? I read that his several AS aliases were merged into one.
