Howdy folks. First, I know there are a number of recent posts on the best small chainsaw and the best handy chainsaw, and I've searched and read them all.

However, many of these posts refer to new models. I am not prepared to buy a brand new saw for occasional light use. So here goes.

Can anyone reccomend a good reliable, lightweight 32-40cc chainsaw designed for occasional cutting, such as maintaining trails and cutting up small logs? I can repair the saw myself without a problem, so buying a low priced saw that needs crank bearings or a set of rings is fine with me. Obviously, basic parts need to be available from various dealers.

As well, the saw will be bought on eBay, basically sight unseen, since it's hard to get a good read on a saw from a few pictures. I have the following dealers nearby. Husqvarna, Stihl, Echo, Efco, Makita(Dolmar). Please do not reccomend the Husky 35, Jonsered 361, Lombard Little Lightning, or any variants of that saw, as they are all the same. I already own of these, and want something different.

Thanks guys.

Well if you;ve read the recent post and done some research... I would recommend a Dolmar 110 (43cc) or a 115 (52cc) they are built on the same chassis and really scream for a little saw in stock form and have been around since 1987 or so.

The husky 50 is a good running saw, but the 55 runs better is built on the same chassis.

I know you said, 32-40cc, but I have never messed with anything that small, so my recommondations have been from personal experience.

for what u plan id get the echo . 3445 i think is the number but not sure on that. echos good and dependable, dealers all over . i think its 34cc or so. but for your purpose u dont need all that much power. tip start w a new chain. these low profile chains cut smooth but not sharpened rite, they can cut rough as heck.good luck

For the money, <$50 you can't beat a homelite super 2 or a poulan XXV.

I have lots of little saws so if you're looking for a little guy in the $40-50 range shoot me a PM.

This is the way I would go also.

For occasional use either of these will last you forever.

Homelite XL/Super 2/XL 2. The ebay prices are still too high for these, I don't get it, your looking at $40 for one that needs work or may be total trash, it is a crapshoot.

For a small used/old saw. I really like the little Poulan Super25. My buddy has one of these and it's a great little saw. Starts right up, comes to a nice idle, he usually lets it sit there for a couple minutes idling, to warm up (says that's what she likes) grabs her and goes right to cutting, like a dream :biggrinbounce2:
I know Poulan gets a bad rap but the S25 is a nice little design and good runner. I've tried for years, to get him to sell that saw to me, no doing:bang:

I get $40 for either the homelite or poulan saws all serviced and ready to go. Guarenteed. Or for $20 I send can send one out that turns over and looks OK but that is a total crapshoot.

I have swarms of those little saws, wouldn't be suprised if there were 50 or so of each.

I've found the XXV is a more durable saw than the homelite but requires frequent work on the fuel system, fuel lines and carb adjustments etc.

I love the little homies with 2 triggers. I think they're a little lighter and more balanced than the poulans.

The super VI 2, that's the saw on the top of my list in this category.

little guy

I have a regular xl hom ey with a 10 incher. i have never held a lighter saw.you can run it with one hand all day long.

Thats not my awnser. Thats just what follows in most post.

Today an old logger just gave me a Jonsered 621
It could win the Best used award.

Poulan S25A. Millions of them out there so parts are cheap. A good running one is usually $40.00-60.00 and cuts quite well. They are in my opinion one of the simplest saws out there to work on. Bar and chains are easily available almost everywhere.

After that Poulan would be almost any other more modern Poulan.

Well atleast he did not throw it in the Dumpster.
Theres still hope for him with Huskys

if you could find a husky 242xp you would be in heaven... propably one of smallest pro saws around and i bet it also claims title of highest reving stock saw...

get something that's hard to kill. stihl 026 or 260 would get my vote.
note you can kill anything if done right. see the killed my new MS 260 thread...

Manual gets it. And I thought it was just me.

The3 little poulans are Ok for occasional use, but you may want to keep an eye out for a Stihl 017 / MS170. No barn burners in bar-length stuff, but for light cleanup, they do well with the narrow chain setup. That or a Dolmar 5100.
