Stihl square file blanks come from as seen below. Some others you can make out too.
The best raker gauge is the Oregon great. The ease of use trumps how soft the steel is.

I use the Oregon gauge. they are cheap enough but I do not file with the tool in place. That does wear off the top. Put it in place, drag the flat edge of the end of the file back-and-forth to see if it snags on the depth gauge. If so I take the tool, stand it on end in the gullet so it protects the sharp point of the tooth, and make a couple strokes on the depth gauge. i pretty rapidly got a feel for how many strokes of the file are needed versus how hard it snags on the tip of the depth gauge.

Well, a couple of things to add to this thread... I sharpen mostly Stihl and Oregon 0.325" chains with a 3/16" file. a couple of years ago I bought a dozen Oregon round files. While they seem to work good initially they don't seem to last very long before they stop cutting. Yes, I have a file card and use it. No, I don't drag the file backwards over the tooth.
Because of the Oregon life issue I have been looking at a new brand and am thinking strongly about trying some Vallorbe files. They seem to have two types of round files. One is called Smooth (DX) and the other is called Second Cut (MDX). Do any of you know what the difference is between these two types and which would be better for chainsaw cutter teeth?

Both Pferd and Vallorbe (and others?) offer both coarser files (faster stock removal) and finer files (smoother finish). The Vallorbe catalog I have does not do a good job of explaining this (a lot of their stuff is in French), but maybe the dealer you purchase them from can help:

I bought a box of 12 Stihl files a few weeks ago. There packed in plastic sleeves 3 to a sleeve. Says there made in Switzerland on the box. I got one out just today to sharpen a chain. Man I love a new file. Smooooth!

I am pretty sure that the (MDX) Second Cut are the coarse variety. I wonder if they last longer than the smooth ones. I did find a link to the GB (English) catalog under documents on this page:

Has anyone figured out who makes the Stihl or the Oregon files?
You guys have, way too many ideas. I was filing the other day and tossed 3 dull files then realized I only had the one I was using left. I like Pferd or Save Edge, I just went to Walmart.com and ordered a doz. Pferd 3/16 files free shipping ($17.something) sent right to my door. That'll go me awhile.

Be careful... I just looked at these on the Walmart web site and based on the part number on the box in the photo these are the Standard (coarse) files and not the Premium (fine) files. I don't know how these will compare to what you are currently using.
The photo for the 13/64" files show a photo of the Standard (coarse) 5/32" file. Looks like you don't know what you will get from this seller... Also the assumed Pferd part number in the title (15000) does not appear to be a valid Pferd part number for a round chainsaw file.
Well, I just tried calling the phone number for Nevada Mountain and it is answered by Bailey's customer service.
I don't have just one kind of sandpaper . . . Maybe it's good to have the coarser files for cleaning up damaged teeth, or reshaping profiles, and the fine files for final touch up work?

When you buy files by the dozen having stock that gets rarely used gets kind of spendy. I only do touch-up with a hand file. Any major damage gets the Dremel grinder. Based on this I would be a good candidate for the smooth/fine files.
I don't care if its coarse or fine really I prefer coarse myself. Time will tell I guess,.. I never checked any files I bought in the past I don't think? But can remember seeing the word coarse on my Pferd box.
Split a box with a friend! GTG's were a great way to do stuff like that . . . .

I never looked either give me the one that lasts longer.I do not know what kind of Walmarts you have in the USA but we here in ThunderBay Ontario Canada have 5 in the city if you go in one and you can actually find a person who works there and you asked them where are the files located you would get the deer in the head lights look.The reply if you could understand it would be some mumbo jumbo because they do not know what a file is and none of the stores have any.There is very little hardware just food clothes tvs etc.

Walmart has no files at all, they are competing with Amazon to fill online orders. My files did not come from Walmart they just source it out to whoever can get files for them. Same thing as Amazon selling ATV tires they don't have tires but they have an arrangement with those who do. So if you sell files and agree to sell files to Walmart you sell 50,000 files a month if you sell files only to your local saw shop you might sell 50 files a month,...sort of thing.
Why don't you buy files direct from the manufacturer eliminate the middle man walmart and Amazon. Doesnt make much sense to me to have files shipped to them and then marked up big time and sent to you.Seems to me the world gone 80 years backwards you used to have Eatons and Sears and you ordered from their catalogs and the stuff was delivered to your door.People got fed up with this and wanted to buy at the store because the product could be examined felt checked over before purchase and take it home now.
The system now is insane a few years ago and I neede a new washing machine went to Home Depot look at the washers tell the salesman I want that washing machine he replies It should be here next week.I asked him do you sell washing machines He says yes I say I want that machine right there .He replies you cant have it.What kind of a store is this I tell him you don"t sell washing machines you only place an order for me at a pretty healthy mark up. Off I go to Sears. At Sears I tell the guy I want that machine he says ok come to the till 75.00 cheaper than Home depot and they put it on my truck.That is why people go to stores to check out the product and have it NOW not buying something sight unseen and waiting weeks on end.
