Maybe because of the rev limiter, or is it actually that.....

Btw, there are two different "Red lights" - the standard and the Magnum - quite big hp difference (about one full hp)......;)

I didn't know that there was two different models of red light 066. Other than a full HP what else is different? I always thought, and was told they were all magnums. I have never seen a standard 066 redlight.

I hope I don't proclaim my ignorance but, I was under the impression they were all Magnums also. Perhaps only a little modification in the printed literature. Maybe Lakeside or another such Stihl Pundit may be able to shed some further light on this issue?

Back then... Magnums had the dual port muffer and I believe the HD filter... motor etc is all the same..

Today - they slap the magnum sticker on anything...

Andy,
What about the 088? Mine says Magnum on it and has the HD filter. It has a dual port muffler that I've never seen on any other, perhaps it's not original. It has the standard deflector on the bar side but also another attached to the front deflecting sideways away from the bar side. The front deflector has a Stihl part number on it. It also has a flange that perfectly fits the contour of the front of the muffler and is held on with two factory looking screws? Both exhaust parts are also screened and look factory installed.

The factory 088 has a solid cast muffer with only one port. Dual port means modded... Shocking...:hmm3grin2orange:

Do you have a picture of the muffler?

Can an 066 be mildly ported without sacrificing too much in reliability? I'm leaning towards an 066, but my primary reason at this point for getting a bigger saw, the more I think about it, is for milling. Although I'd still use the saw for other stuff occasionally, I'm happy with the 056 for felling it's just a bit slow in the big stuff. So if an 066 will mill fine stock or mildly warmed over I'll probably pick up some version of the 066 unless some other deal jumps out at me. I'm also leaning towards an 066 since I have several brand new, never even mounted on a saw, Stihl bars that will fit on the 066, not that the cost of the bar would deter me, but no sense in spending money I don't have to.

No one has really commented much so I am going to assume that for any particular series (06x, 08x) there isn't anything to stay away from as far as undesirable models (like having a engineering defect, etc.).

If you are going to mill, I'd look more towards the 066 with the beefier crank and poly-flywheel - after 1995...

The quickest and mildest 066 mod is to just put the dual port muffer front on... and get back the 0.7hp (+/-) lost wihout it...

:ices_rofl:

That's part of an 029 deflector screwed onto an 088 muffler... Hmmm... What does that make? ;)

First, I didn't put it there and was just asking the question. Second, as funny as it may seem, it works. :D Thanks anyway,
Jay

i always liked the 056.

some of those old saws really come alive with the addition of modern bar and chains.my buddy just bought a 056 and with a stihl rsc chain it's a nice smooth cutter.
