I saw an ad for a Bobcat 863, not running, recent engine rebuild (I'm going to ask a few more questions about why).. its 75 hp Deutz, not sure if it's the high flow version.

I've used all sorts of other heavy equipment, but never a skidsteer.. I'd like to know the common failure points of them.. especially if they are expensive ones.. how to check final drives/clutches and whatnot.. I've learned that engine failures are actually usually one of the cheaper things to repair!

What's a fair price for it? it seems like they typically go for $10-12K.. if I'd get it for $4K would that give me enough leeway to call it a deal?

So far this is the only pic I have of it... tires are worn, he says it's in fair shape otherwise

It will be hard to check most of it out without it running. I had a 763 and it was a solid machine with 2900 hours on it when I sold it. The drives are hydraulic motors. Pins and bushings along with hoses can get expensive on them.

Judging by it's apparent age, it looks like this is a C series, which apparently is a little clunkier a machine than the G series. I'll have to get more pictures before I can make a much better judgement on it's true condition.

Clunky is a relative term though.. a JD350B crawler is FAR more 'clunky'

The Deutz has a good rep, it's weak link is that it uses a timing belt vs gears. If it is not running due to moter problems, check belt, timing first.

I just got word it's an electrical problem.. Engine was rebuilt 6 years ago, In my experience, timing belts fail more due to age than due to use. Were those still the air cooled Deutz?

Thanks for the tips so far

An 4k for a non runner I'd walk away. My buddy got into a newer skidsteer with a trailer to tow it for 1500. It need the pumps that control the wheels and they control valve assembly. Cost him like 5k for a hydraulic system rebuild.
