Can you spot the poison ivy?

My sister had got it on her face. Someone had been burning it but her faced looked like a red balloon. She had to be hospitalized an the dumb nurse thought she was pregnant and made her do the test.

I'm not sensitive to it...I get asked frequently to clean trees of vines, fell infested trees...all the good stuff.

People don't realize that that's not the end...what do you with it now???

Can't risk burning it on site...nobody but myself can use it for firewood...that's out as well since my wife can't even look at the stuff.

So, there's a big ol' pile of wood and vines in a very secluded place...I torch it every now and again...

Here's the kicker...no one can even get near my truck. Don't ask to borrow any of my saws...

I had a friend borrow my Silky pole saw from the garage without my knowledge...he calls a few days later...sick as heck...figures he got into something. I ask him, what do you think I use to cut vines outta' trees???

Stay away from the stuff guys...oils are potent after having dried on ANYTHING for twenty years...

I'm fifty three now, and this past summer a noticed a small outbreak on the inside of my forearm...wife's doctor insists no one is actually immune to the stuff...even the most insensitive will contract it when a potent strain is encountered.

Let me add...you take your dog in the woods with you...wife greets dog upon your return...wife hates you for awhile...

If you get into this stuff heavy...and get the oils on your tools...you can reinfect yourself again and again...all the time swearing "I wasn't even near the stuff!!!".

we don't have the vine stuff around here, only small plants. I had not grown up around it, so never knew what to look for until I was in my mid 50's. I was weedwhipping some trials sections, 90+F, boots and stubbies only. no shirt. wiping sweat with towel on legs, arms, back, chest, face, etc, etc. Weed whipping pureed that stuff into a mist in the air. couple days later, started blisters. couple more days went to dr. and found out what it was. covered maybe 60-75% of my body exposed skin. and it was bad. not super painful, but oozing every inch of skin continuinly. Very thankful didn't hit my lungs.

Have had it several times since, just a few square inches of skin usually, but I am pretty over sensitive to it now. and also hyper vigilante on watching for it.

There is a special expensive soap to remove the oil, which I now carry in all my vehicles and med kits. needs to be used within an hour or so of exposure. There is also an ivy creme as preventative, but Idon't think that would work unless covered entire body.

the hot showers helped the itch, but then caused worse blistering.

and, the smoke can be fatal to breathe: it chemically/mechanically burns the lung linings and there is no medical way to counteract it.

I didn't realize the oil hangs on equipment a long time, so that is good to know.

nasty stuff.

It seems over the years I have gotten it worse and worse. I TRIED to fight it this year wearing all kinds of extra gear etc. Ended up with it anyway because of the sawdust from my saw. Blew it around and ended up under all my layers. Also went to my dr and got a shot(some type of steroid) and that didn't help either.

Poison ivy sucks, worst part is, that it is all over my park and the areas I cut for firewood.

if you treat tools with some substances you can usually get the oils off. someone once told me vinegar works, on the Technu bottles they claim it works, i really cant tell. Ive also been told by my doctor that once it shows up as a rash its not contagious.

it is never 'contagious' in that it is not a biological agent that goes through a cycle and spreads only in a certain phase. It is an oil that attacks the skin chemically. Sort of a like a bottle of battery acid on the shelf, stays nasty, don't put your finger in it, never becomes 'not contagious'.

Very true...it's not contagious...it's contractual. And stays that way for a good long time.

Been cleaning tools and such with De-solv-it...so far so good. Wife hasn't contracted anything since I started using it...usually she only needs to touch a tool and it's "I hate you, you ...... ......!!!!"

Yet another reason to love this product.

Oils bond to skin body throws white blood cells at it hence the lesions, in simplistic terms. Ultra violet light does break the oil down takes a couple years. I get also but my reaction isn't the big blisters it's like heat rash all over - no area is immune. Last time was about 5 yrs ago. Just noticed some on the lot this morning. dang stuff is a 1.5ft high and to think 2 weeks ago I was all over that area with the string trimmer. Guess I dodged the bullet that time. Its going to get the treatment later today other wise sure as any thing the dogs will bring it to me.
