Jeff, I agree with the idea of your repair shop and I would add cracked lines in the mix.

You are mixing terminology when you say you are running your saws richer bc you are running more oil. You are actually leaning the saw out when you do this. It is not necessarily a bad thing (though not needed assuming you are running synthetic oil), but it needs to be accounted for in tuning your saws. Running richer would be increasing the amount of gasoline in the air/fuel ratio.

Well I am sure you are right but around here if we say richer we would expect to see a little more smoke.Like if you take out the plug and it is dark colored like mine are ( dark tan to brown not light tan to white ish) we have always said running rich = too much ,......I was gonna say oil but i started to type Fuel which is what I think you are saying rich = more fuel. By god you got me to thinking now.I know just what you mean rich = fuel lean=air More oil = better lube.

I should know better by now, whenever I start talking i start making mistakes ha ha

I'll also do a lot more reading on tuning the saw and get the proper tools for carb..

There you go.

I do A LOT of reading on this forum. Best chainsaw forum, bar none!

Most questions you will have can be found with a thorough search. If you can't find your answer with the AS forum search, ask it in a bigger search engine (like Google). Most of the time it will send you back here anyway. :msp_thumbsup:

Regarding the S25DA, to me the fact it starts and runs is hopeful. I would take off the bar and chain and make sure there is nothing there around the clutch that is interfering with the chain.
but before I did that, if I had taken the carb and filter cover off, I would check and make sure you put it back on right. Set the choke to off and take off the cover and see if the choke is really off. It can be put on where the choke lever is in the wrong position. You could be trying to run it with the choke on. I'm just guessing here; I never overheated a saw so I don't know what that would do.

On my saw, at idle, the chain still spins, but a little slower.

No obstructions found. Chain on mine also moved at idle. I've tried to adjust to stop and this makes matters worse.
Thanks to all for excellent responses.

If I did score the pistons and wanted to repair the S25AD and Husqvarna 51 it would probably require the cylinder bored and a new piston - right? Lots of $ to do I expect.

Many times you can clean up and reuse the cylinder with an acid treatment. these cylinders are plated, and replating is expensive. I would guess that you can find a good reasonably priced aftermarket piston and rings for the Husqvarna 51, not sure about the S25AD but someone here will know.

Welcome

Yep. No boring or honing of these cylinders. Study up on the 'muriatic acid' threads and ask questions BEFORE attacking those cylinders. Aftermarket rings can be sourced for the Poulan. Good used P/C sets and sometimes NOS parts can be found on feebay sometimes. Often times a parts saw is the best way to go (for both saws). Did you open up the mufflers and look inside to see if you have clogged spark screens? While you're in there, you can look through the exhaust ports at the pistons and cylinders (if you haven't done so already...........I can't remember).

Try rebuilding them

Dont give up you have a bench some tools and a real great group of people to help you out right here.
I have run saws for over 30 years but this last winter I rebuilt my first saw with the help of Arborsite. Since then I have saved and rebuilt 12 more and I learn somthing new evertime.I just in the last 1/2 hour rebuilt a carb for one of my Partner 500's.Before last winter I would have never tried to do that. Choose 1 saw go slow ask questions and start there you will learn more by doing than by paying.

Chain Saw Carburetor

Yes - I've got the original manual. I'll try to scan and make a pdf to send to you. If your interested I also have the case - a heavy duty plastic shell with metal clasps. I'd sell the saw too if your interested in spare parts.
Regards,
Muns
