Can't modify/delete a post I made

Limiting edit times amounts to takinging away ownership of a persons words and photos so I voted for no time limit.

BTW, photos are still able to be deleted in the user's CP. Hopefully this function will not be turned off too.

Send a letter to the editor of a newspaper, have it published and then tell them you want to change it... just a little bit, or get it back. Oh, you already signed a release... Surely we don't want to go down this path on AS?

totally irrelevant discussion IMO. A hypothetical case : What if AS for ex. would decide to use your posts and let's say, making a new chainsaw repair manual for commercial use, would you like to be asked for approval or not ?
if you would oppose and AS would do otherwise against your will, wouldn't you like the opportunity to delete your posts ?
there are lots of issues involved here...

PS. My posts are totally useless, so I don't run that risk :hmm3grin2orange:

In that case the only protection for either party is a user agreement (between AS and a member) as part of registering. I can't remember if there was one or not. I probably just said "yup" even if there was. I'm in favor of no contracts in the case.

Right now a user has little to no control over the distribuation of posts made - it's all available by search engines for the entire world to see. Personally, I don't care, but can see that some might, and that some should;)

another vote for putting it back like it was!

if it's not broken.... don't fix it

there's no perfect solution, sure some will go back and delete their posts and screw up threads. but so what! it was their post to begin with.

besides... except a few instances of this happening.... is this a large enough problem to justify making wholesale change from a successful formula? this new SHORT edit rule changes for everyone how AS works!

no edit is taking ownership of your own words away from you.
there's some real safety aspects of this I don't like. what if you made a mistake posting some critical information. it doesn't happen very often, but it does happen. I'd like to go back and delete it.

for instance... some asked what's a good rope to start with. I posted a link to a 120ft hank of safety blue for $72. well... I didn't look at picture close enough. it was twisted rope... instead of braided rope like what I'm using.

naturally I went back and deleted that information and made sure person that posted request got the correct info.

PLEASE CONSIDER CHANGING IT BACK!

It's a little hard to go back in a printed newspaper but let's suppose you wrote an article for a newspaper in which you had made some factual and spelling errors. This newspaper keeps a web site where published articles are available to all.

Would it not be advantageous to all to edit the online version?

It says 'edited by' and gives the date and time whenever editing is done here at AS so it's easy to spot edited postings.

Well... the newspaper editor makes the spelling changes anyhow...

On AS, I'm assuming that the system software tracks the actual changes; maybe I'm wrong... but it's the "mad-man" deletion that seems to have some bothered.

I thought 36 hours would be resonable, voted for 48

Now, I am not the kinda guy that would start deleting my posts in such a situation, but I believe if someone feels that he is not being treated correctly here, that he's free to take his 'belongings' with him and leave.

I don't see your posts here being specifically yours to do what you want with; when posted they belong to the thread so to speak. Each post is a valuable piece to make up the whole thread, and by editing yours, or even worse deleting it, you might affect the whole thread, and wipe out it's meaning. Or at least make it hard to follow for someone who reads it long afterwards.

It's not what you, as a single person, write that makes it valuable, it's what we write together that makes it, but only if it's kept in it's context and all posts are preserved.

Persons deleting their posts are the biggest no-no if this site should keep being a good source for information. If the price for preventing that is that I can't correct my spelling errors a week later, then it's all fine by me.

All threads here are a valuable piece of information, maybe even to be considered as art or a piece of history. It should be conserved as a document on the strange community of people that once were into trees, saws and computers. Oh, the exeption might be some of THALL's threads where you probably could delete random sentences, posts or even whole pages without the thread loosing any of it's relevance...:biggrinbounce2:

Now you really have made me mad :buttkick: . Thall's threads are the most valuable ones to me, ya hear, they are about FINE people, not saws ;)

Seriously now, I personally am not so keen about the ownership of my posts, but I want to have the right to at least edit them, without time limit.

Like Treeco mentioned, you don't have to create a whole set of new rules to a problem that was (still is) nearly inexistent. Let's not punish the whole poster society here for a few individuals.
just my 02 cts

Isn't this addressed in the guidelines you agreed to before becoming a member here? Check # 16 in the guidelines at the top of the page. :D

Thanks for pointing that out. The rule is clear  .

But this guideline also made it very clear that :

All posts are the property of the original poster

So shouldn't I have the right to edit/delete it at any time ? Looks quite obvious now.

No, not according to the agreement. You were given an ownership right to your post, I didn't see anything about the right to edit, let alone the right to edit indefinitely.

Further

You also agreed to waive the right under certain conditions

If deletion is the worry, then could a way be developed for a moderator to approve of edits in the same way the trading post is set up? When I edit my spelling, I give my reason for wanting to edit. It could then go to a mod for approval. If the original poster has deleted their post, the moderator could but the "keebosh" on it right then and there. That should keep deleting from being a problem and allow for editing.

Maybe the amount of editing being done is huge and that would add a ton of work to the moderators. That is not my intent. You guys do a great job!

Good idea, but wouldn't work for me. In my case I'd be pestering the mods multiple times a day... and multiple times per post sometimes!

Truth to be told, I am kinda p@ssed what happened to Windthrown. The guy was obviously involved in an emotional rally (supported by several AS members) against a bad ebay seller, and instead of being protected by the mods against himself, they choose to pick on him publicly afterwards. Now, I am not the kinda guy that would start deleting my posts in such a situation, but I believe if someone feels that he is not being treated correctly here, that he's free to take his 'belongings' with him and leave.

roland

You got your facts all screwed up. All they did was lock a thread, then he went all haywire.

I also think that's a good idea someone (Treeco?) suggested about locking pictures up so they can't be edited. If you ain't got nads enough to stand behind what you put out there, then don't post.

Pester away Lake, you are never a bother. I have installed an editing approval button in my sig, feel free to use it as often as you need it, my door is always open and I promise you a quick decision in in each case, after carefully reviewing all the pertinent facts of course
