i was just thinking of the vast differences in level of knowledge on this forum..u have the occasional user, the
fairly regular user who has some knowledge[mostly of his own saw, the loggers and firewood cutters. the dealers ,,the people whos goal an sport is to beat he competition in contest, and of course the professional arboristand tree service owners..
as one who fit into he group ,,know my own saw and use it regular..id lioke to say just how much i appreciate the knowledge those that know more than myself have been willing to share..
as the forum gets larger the job of enforcing the rules will get larger..its a totally thankless job,as far as i can tell..
especially if u try and enforce the rules
for the full spectrumof users..
kinda reminds me of a sheriffs job..
which is almost impossible to do if u dont cater to the powers that be..
few can do it.. they dont stay in office long usually..
that is the kinda sheriff i hope we can get for this forum. i dont envy u your job even a little bit..but i will commit to rying not omake it any harder..ive had my say..thanks again to all who have helped me on this forum..im a better saw man ,,for it..
ps i mite add ,,i do not want the sheriffs job.. who in heir rite mind would

I agree with your sentiments, Tony. It's obviously not an easy job. To be honest though, the moderators of other internet forums have an easier job than the people around here. I've never seen ruder, less tolerant, or more belligerent posts on any internet forum than I've seen here. Total disrespect for other posters seems to be the norm rather than the exception. It's too bad, because there are lots of knowledgeable people here, and to see everything turn into a p*ss*ng contest every time is pretty sad. I'm not long for this forum. I'm glad to know it exists, but I can't spend my time reading the insulting responses to most threads.:(

I agree with Rick "roll with the flow". If you joined a logging crew to learn all you could about the business, you wouldn't stay home because one of the loggers told you to "shut up and listen". When in Rome, do as the Romans- the language is going to be harsh at times and if you ask an ignorant question, it will be brought to your attention. If you post and untruth, it will be brought to your attention. These are hard working (and hard drinking-for some) men of the woods and, if you chose to learn, you will have to accept their crude honesty at times-but you will increase your knowledge of chainsaws. Paul

i would have to agree with th last two posters. on a crew of men ,,tho theres the equaliser of getting to settle differences like men ..here we have an huge crew.. one guys got to stand between an organisd helpful forum and what would eventually turn into total chaos..thats heck of a job for one or two men..they usually dont enhance their popularity ,,if they enforce the rules..
lets helpum do it..
as to whinining different hings upset different people.. as for me ,im old, shoulders shot and rite now the back is out.. guess what, i think i could still best a lotta young fellas, cause i know one thing.. if they aint no quit in u.. that alone will just blow there minds ,,especially t his day in time.,.i use to raise pit bulls cause i admired that quality..
still do and still will measure up to it best i can ,long as i can get up..aint nothin quite like it and usually those with it,, dont do a lotto big bad talking an squabbling.
funny thing ,,when i was evaluating dogs back then .. i learned that the loud barkers and maneaters would finally quit in the face of a dog that just kept pouring it on ,,winning or losing ,,made no difference

I'm not so sure this forum is so bad...I've probably missed the worst of it, but I could point out a couple of small political discussion forums that used to get really, really, REALLY bad.

Ya just gotta remember that it takes all kinds to make a world. If somebody really gets under your hide, maybe it's time to step back and take a deep breath.

Don't feed the trolls, as it were.

Hey Sasquatch,

Try not to take offense to TreeCo`s reply. You`ll find that he is a pretty even keeled guy and does not normally offend. I think that we are all a little uptight with a variety of issues lately, not the least of which is the departure of a friend of ours who was moderator of this forum. As you may be aware, he was ultimately overwhelmed by people whining incessantly instead of taking the bull by the horns.

As to the make up and general demeanor of this forum, well let`s just say that we are probably the kind of guys who would be the outspoken and boisterous know it alls in any local watering hole, but we also share a bond with the other members here and would cover each others backs if needed. I thought that I saw the same in you and that`s why I asked you to stop by, so don`t be run off so easily. You will soon understand that most of the strife here is merely superficial for most of us and that our little community works things out amongst ourselves. How many other forums do you visit where the members are travelling great distances to get together with people who were complete strangers before meeting at a chainsaw forum?

Russ

Russ, you know from other places that I'm not shy - nor did I mean to sound like a whiner. I appreciate a bit of a rubbing, and if a guy posts something that's just plain wrong or silly, he deserves to be shown. That's what the place is for. But SHOWN - not just called a dummy.

It may be that I misunderstood the announcement, but I wonder if our ex-moderator was sick of the whining, or sick of the personal attacks in posts? Maybe a bit of both...

Of course loggers and landscapers and the like are a funny lot if judged from the outside - "a good bunch of arseholes" as my grand-dad would've said. Having not hung around here that much, I'm basically walking in cold to a discussion already in progress between parties who know each other well. It's tough to get a handle on. But from here it looks like there's a lot more brushing off than listening going on.

I'll sign off with the blue blob just cuz I think it's funny.:blob2:

I don't spend much time on the chainsaw forum, but that's what I am! I haven't climbed a tree in over 3 years, but I sure have planted a bunch. Consider it "Job Security for Butch", if you will.:D

But then again, I may be a landscaper, but I also consider myself a "tree guy" as well...

Dan

Isn't logging just a sort of goup-oriented landscaping?;) And arborists are just loggers who tend to cut little tiny logs... You guys and yer fancy distinctions... and really it's all just carpentry!

Funny, I do quick scans of the forum daily for the most part and I don’t really see what all the hubbub is about. Forums are all about opinions and opinions are like a lot of things, everyone’s got one. If is see a post where someone is spouting off and I think they are way off base, I tend to ignore it. One of my favorite sayings: “Never wrestle with a pig, you both come out covered in mud and smelling like manure but the pig enjoys it.”
The information that I have found here, has been invaluable. A guy like me, who mostly cuts fire wood and does some milling would never in a hundred years, known as much about saws and how to use them properly if it were not for the folks here, including the occasional wrestling pig.

I don't really know is going on. It must be stuff being PM'ed to people that everyone else doesn't know about??? I think this site is great and I have had many questions answered, and yes sometimes things need to be blunt. I hope it isn't going away.

I agree with Doug01. I've learned more in the past three weeks here than in the previous 20 years I spent cutting firewood and doing "homeowner" type stuff (pruning, small takedowns, etc.) There's no where else in the world to read about the race chain craftsmanship that Art Martin described.

I used to read a lot of gun control and motorcycle forums: talk about flames! Those groups were 90-95% flame threads. This group is unbelievably civil.
