I having trouble with my echo cs 345. The chain keeps popping off. Im not sure if the tension device is working? it seams like there is too much play in the chain. is it possible to replace the tension screw and tightening unit. or am i just installing things wrong. the saw is fairly new.

Thank you for your reply. I certainly do not find being asked to redirect my thread to another forum offensive. I do however find your second comment offensive to a degree as this is a place for learning and meaningfull discussion. The problem with my saw is not a chronic problem. It appears to be happening since i replaced the chain. I have been instructed in the proper installation of the chain and bar as well as safe use. I thought since it is late sunday evening and the saw is here within reach, i thought to ask for the thoughts of others. (SNIP)

The 345 is a good little saw. The chain should not be comming off. So we will need a little more information to figure out what's wrong.
When it comes off are you cutting normally?
Do you have the chain tension set correctly to start with?
Are you cutting bushes off at the ground?
If the chain is sharp, and you don't push too hard, the tension should stay the same for several tankfulls of gas.

chain

I am think that the chain tension is not right form the start. it appears that the tensioner is not able to tighten the chain so im think its broken or im doing somthing wrong when installing the chain.

A buddy of mine just picked up an Echo 3000 last week. It seems that the chain will not tighten up on this saw too. When you turn the adjustment screw ( which is on the bar side cover ) it goes so far then you hear a clicking noise like something is stripped. Is this similar to what you are experiencing?

Ive been using the small echos (3000,3400) for several years now. Great saw. Have you checked the bar?? There could be a ding in it somewhere toward the tip thats causing the chain to pop off. If you have a spare bar, replace it and see if you are still having problems.

The tension screw should not make any difference.

yes but no noise

It just wont tighten anymore. Im assuming it is stripped or worn, it used to work fine.

With the side cover off, place the bar on the studs and put on the chain. You'll notice the bar studs are a little wider close to the saw. Now put the side cover on and hand tighten the nuts (no wrench). Wiggle the bar a little to make sure it's on the studs correctly and tighten the nuts a little more with your fingers.
Now set the tension. As you screw, you'll see the bar move out and tighten the chain. If it doesn't, you done something wrong or it's broke.

I know this sounds stupid and im not trying to be a smart donkey, but if it wont tighten any more, Id say the chain is stretched.

When was the last time you used it, had the problem, tried fixing it? End of the day, tired as heck, long day, frustrated??? Some times if this is the case, one doesn't quite think logically. Now that youve had some down time, jump back in it and look from all angles. You might see something you didnt see before.

Is the chain too long for the adjustment to take up the slack. I have used saws with no adjusters other than the bar nuts, but if there is not enough slack in the slots there is a problem. Did this occur only after you put on a new chain. I'm thinking of a mismatch of chain pitch and sprockets pitch possibly or a chain with a few extra links. Some Husky and Stihl chains of the same nominal bar size have different number of links. What led up to the problem. We are coming in in the middle of the movie so to speak.

the chain is brand new

This is the first time it happened with this saw. everyother chain was fine and anytihing going wrong with it was definatley operator error due to fatigue ,blatent stupity, or trying to work fast rather than smart. as mentioned this is a new chain and a new occurence. i bought another chain today so i will start over tommorow. this chain matched the saw based on the box but the tensioner would take up the slack

Id say either you bought the wrong chain or the tensioner has broken....Rob

this will most likely sound like a dumb reply to all you sawnuts & gearheads but, after all these years, this still happens to me on occasion. when you disassemble the side cover and remove the bar you will always have to adjust/loosen the tensioner before reassembly. then you have to be sure the tensioner pin engages the bar when you put it back on. if you don't get it in there, and go torquing the bar nuts down, then you will most likely damage the cover and or tensioner. these are plastic covers. usually theyll spring back if not broken, but it sounds like you need to do a close inspection of your clutch cover, tensioner assembly, and bar. check to see if the tensioner pin is there, or sheared off. it should protrude up from the mounting surface on the cover. rotate the lead screw to see if it's bent. wiggle the pin on the tension screw threads & see if it's too loose. grasp the pin with needle nose and turn the screw at the same time to see if it's stripped. when you reassemble it, and you got it right, snug up the bar nuts finger tight, lift up on the tip of the bar, and tighten the screw. you should easily be able to see the chain tighten up, if it aint, somethings not right. so don't go reefin down the bar nuts till you figure out what. i never run a saw with a loose chain. this aint safe anytime. a chain flying off at high speed will mess you up. trust me. been there, done that. read the manual on chain tension.
good luck.

alrighty..

How old is this 345? I believe Echo has used three separate tensioning systems in recent years. Any chance you have the Intenz bar?

i would suggest putting your old chain on an see if u have the problem or not..
a chain itself cant affect the tensioner.
so if the problem is gone ,,u chains too long. this should be apparent anyway as if it is,, the tensioner will be at max length..id suggest u keep the side plate off and just watch as u run the tensioner in an out. that way u will understand whats going on .

somthing just aint right

prolly me!! never had this before. I bought a new guide bar and chain no difference, old chain no difference. when i turn the tension screw clockwize it wont tighten the chain. somthing doesnt appear to be lining up right or im just having a a serious brain fart.

If you bought a new bar+chain and it is supposed to fit your saw, and if you put it on correctly, and you turn the chain tensioning screw clockwise, and the chain doesn't tighten, then you have a broken chain adjuster.
