and ANOTHER rookie question!

I picked up this Stihl grinder this evening on a C/L add :

Chainsaw SHARPENER

(hopefully ya'll can see the link/get there from here!)

Seems from the mid '70's - has West Germany enbossed on the casting. AEO motor; single direction. Simple on-off toggle switch.

Too late for pics - (too dark in the shop, and I can't keep the camera on an even kell ;-) ) Will post some tomorrow afternoon in better light (and less Alcohol %) .

Only "flaws" I can see is : (as of right now)

a chunk missing from the chain support arm..

Fan-side of motor has some damage - not hitting; but looks like it took a hit/drop or few..

"Home-Made" stand seems to be "twicked" - not sure of the welding job or the condition of his yard.

SO, how did I do?! - It's GOTTA be better than a H.F./Chincom unit! May be along the line of a Nothern Tool unit.

My OTHER question is :

Can I get a Silvery SQUARE grind wheel to behave on it?

I know - pics are better.. It has a round-ground wheel on it now (maybe .404, but more than likely a 3/8'ths [ We don't grow them THAT big here on the Island...]) I wold like to "experiment" with a square chain, but all I can get is round (cheaply enough).

I'll get the specs off the wheel that's on it now - dia., arbor size, width - when I snap a few...

Holding pattern until I get off my lazy a!

Thanks for any info that you can provide under this LIMITED info!

You done okay

No doubt it is far more accurate than the cheaper stuff!!

I seen those produce some darn good looking chains inspite of the non-reversing motor.

A square grinder it is not. There is a reason why square grinders are $$, sorry to disappoint.

if your bac matches the guy who built the stand then it will appear to be perfect:hmm3grin2orange:

So I need a bent bar and a burnt chain, that's been used as a ditch witch, runnin' backwards to make it right?! :hmm3grin2orange:

I figured so on the square - I can't afford a Silvery for a loop or so, just to piss in the wind...

I might get some from one of our sponcers just to try it out. Most of the stuff here is either old/rotten and/or blown downs (being old and rotten...) and not too much above 24" ABH.

that didn't last long..

I might as well have drunk/inhaled/snorted the buck and a half I let go on this :censored: :msp_angry:

(and, BTW, I DO drink on occasion, smoke [tobacco] and NEVER snorted - just so that you don't get the wrong impression :) )

Today, being my "Sunday" - a day for relaxing, I decided to try out my new "toy." I have some pretty badly sharpened/beat to heck chain that I was saving for such an occasion.

Plugged it in, and hit the "On" switch. Came to live, like it did at the sellers shop. I did notice more of a vibration from it - maybe it never saw level ground. Shimmed up the low wheel with a piece of shingle to make it more stable/not rocking as much. O.K. -it still runs... got one of my "better of the worst" chains, set up the angle @ 30deg, set depth where needed, set the stop so that it barely hit the shortest cutter, and away I went.

About half way through the first side of the 24"/84 d.l. chain, it started to slow down on me. Did I take too much of a bite, and stalled it? Let it recover, but still seemed "off" Did a few more links, and seems to be running at least half-speed.

OK, now WTF! Tore it completely down, and did some electrical checking -

1- The vibration I feel is that it's missing 5 fins from the fan side of the motor - making it unbalanced!

2- I guess due to age and use(abuse) the cap. isn't holding enough of a charge / not long enough.
(that I can see due to age, and storage conditions when I picked it up)

So, today I ordered another run cap. (12Mfd., 250Vac) - should be here Monday (just in time for my weekend). I'm also going to pull the fan off and see how I can balance it/improvise the broken blades.

More to follow...

(if I don't throw it against the shop wall by then)

ALSO - going to get the base level - maybe some heat and the BFH, then add some ballast to the lower end (old plow/blade edge should do the trick)
