Maybe the 290. But not the 359 or the 6400. Granted the 6400 is a little heavy for is displacement. The 359 dead wrong there.........it is comparable in weight to any other saws in the 60cc class. Just don't be splitting hairs over a few ounces.

Ok the 359 isn't a boat anchor but it's take 10 more cc's, 1 lbs extra weight, and a few extra $'s to match a Dolmar PS5100's power output.

Maybe with a 16" bar. Put a 20" on them and I think things will be different

If you go the modded route.........the 359 will stomp the 5100 everytime!

One important thing to consider. While a lot of us really like the Dolmar line and don't mind waiting and dealing for parts online some want something they can get serviced locally and this is where the 359 wins hands down.

The specs on a 359 are only 3.9 hp & 3.8 for the 5100s? Haven't had a chance to take some video and time it yet, but my 5100 feels about as fast as my 357xp. I know I can dig into a cut more with the dogs on the 5100.

hmm

This dolamr to husky359 thing... You talking from specs or from experceince. If your talking specs... whats the pricing and whats the torque. And if you want power to weight ratio lets drag a 357 out of the closet.... The 359 is a great buy.

Well I timed some cuts today,

2 cuts for 4 saws, 15" birch log.
5100s w/ stock 18" bar & .325 chain - 13:08 & 12:38
5100s w/ 16" bar & .325 Carlton chisel - 10:18 & 10:00
357xp w/18" bar & .325 Carlton chisel - 10:05 & 10:15
7900 w/20" bar & 3/8 Oregon chisel - 7:14 & 7:00

Saws were stock except for the 357xp it was PP by Dozer Dan ( I don't know what this says about the builder). I did open the muffler on the 5100s.
The 7900 isn't fully broke in yet, about 7 tanks of gas run thru it.

The times were so close on the 357 & 5100 I will spin a couple of new loops of chain to make sure things are even. Then try again tomorrow and hopefully I will figure out how to get the video on the computer.

Why there is MS290 and not MS361, price:confused:
If price puts the limit, then HVA 359 or Dolmar 6400 are the saws to go from these three.;)

The Dolmar 6400 is head and shoulders above the other two. The 6400 is a pro saw and the other saws mentioned are consumer grade.

The 359 is no doubt a pro quality saw. How it is marketed differs from market to market, though.
I would consider the 6400 a better saw only if you really need the ekstra power, as it is also a much heavier saw (weights the same as 7900).

The MS 290 does not deserve to be mentioned in the same tread as the others......

Artwood,
could you do your comparison using the same bar for the 357 and the 5100 just to remove the variables. Also can you test the 346 just for a comparison?

I would also like to know if the 359/2159 are the same why is the 359 rated at 3.9 hp and the 2159 rated at 4.1hp? Maybe one is over or under stated?

Lucky

Another saw already mentioned is the Redmax. The Redmax 621 best value on the market. Of the saws you previously mentioned I would go dolmar!

Thanks for the info guys. I have got a new saw now (xmas present). I got a new Shindaiwa 488 with a 20" Windsor Roll Top Super Pro Bar. Was a bit worried that it was only 3.5HP but it has plenty of torque! Dones everything i need and more. Great saw.

Has anyone modded this saw? what were the power gains?
