Yes ! That's almost exactly what we do: we take the "lid" off our chipper truck and it becomes the log truck.

Only I bought the whole truck with the crane mounted, a "man-cab" in front of the crane, and a 12' dump bed behind the crane: $7500 for a pretty solid old truck (1987)

All we had to do was build the cover for the dump bed.

Sounds like a good deal. Is it a diesel or gas truck? Sorry for the hi-jack of the thread.

Gas-pig, underpowered. That's why it was such a deal. But then again, it was a practically new rebuilt "GM-Goodwrench" engine, that has done very well for us.

Slower than death going down the road, but it keeps my guys from having wrecks and burning up the brakes.

LOL!! I guess we really do think alike. 366 gasser I am guessing? Thats what is in our c-70. The 2sp rear really helps it out but it still struggles when it has to pull the bandit 1890 and a load of chips. I just picked up 2- ford 7.3 powerstroke diesels complete running gear in bolth. I am thinking about throwing 1 of them in the old GMC next winter for a little extra oomph but I am having trouble with the thought of a ford motor in my GMC, LOL.. Rather put a duramax in it but the price was right on the 7.3's and I needed a tranny for the 1 ton so it worked out well.

Yep. 366.

When I bought it, it would really sail down the road (un-loaded). Hard on clutches, hell to back up a hilly driveway with the chipper on the back.

Then we trashed the differential, and put a different pumpkin in, with a lower speed (higher ratio). No more pulling the hill problems, we have as much trouble getting down the hills now, as we do going up them.

50 is about tops, but I can back up any driveway without slipping the clutch !

Its all good if its bought and paid for it makes just as much money as a new one with a payment. If you do not mind tinkering with it to keep her going day in and day out.
