3/4 rope is almost always gross overkill IMO. When 3/4 is needed it becomes important to have a tree with good structure due to the loads 3/4 rope is usually used for. That is of course we are talking a good 3/4 rope like Stable-Braid or the like. Nothing wrong with using the tree for a rigging point. The Port-a-wraps breaks are really worth their weight in gold. I do a lot of rigging with natural crotches. Smaller jobs it is someties not worth it to set a block. For more intense work, or if I have a great rigging point a block is the way to go. Some ropes knot better than others, but that being said, I have never had a bowline come loose with any braid.

I'm close to oppisite from you swyman.75%1/2in and 25% 3/4 bull rope.

Yes ,a pulley does save wear and tear on a rope. But I only use them every now and then myself.
Mostly for blocking down big wood.
A portawrap makes slowing down and controlling rope speed a lot easier. You don't have to pull 100ft of line around a trunk for one thing and and you definitely will want some brakes on the line when you switch to a pulley.Pieces will seem heavier when you use a pulley.Less friction. But much more consistant.
