I have to agree with Jason, it's obviouse that there was a lot of deadwood in this tree. Having everyone jump in and start bashing is one of the problems with this site. Knee jerk responces on lack of information.

I wish Erick would have done a little more research before posting. But maybe he ran into a brick wall.

I had done this on purpose because it is exactly the typical reaction you'd expect without information signed at the tree or read in news items here. Nothing in our Arborage which is mailed to all QAA members, an ideal way to get the story out.

It shouldn't be my job to research what BCC is doing with trees and hunt down the facts. It is their job to inform us, they are the custodians of the trees and have the funding/bylaws to sign out a site with reference on where the entire documentation is or who to speak to.

Now the irony about the lack of information is that it's still not forthcoming.

What a drive by tourist or everyday Joe sees is a hacked tree ... end of story. He might think, "oh, i have one of them at home that's getting a little large I'll do that to it".

Then the last home-owner I spent an hour with educating against topping his gum tree drives past and says, "crikey, that stupid arborist wasted an hour of my life telling me not to do that when it's clearly good as the council's done it in a park."

Also, I have read our Australian Standards of Pruning inside out and it makes no allowances for this. So is BCC smarter than AS4373? Are their species which are exempt from AS4373? Have a look at the attached pic of what would happen if you did that to a poinciana? How many trees are gonna get whacked now that council knows best and has set new pruning methods into place?

That's what these council people have to realise, they're on public display ALL THE TIME. Failure to sign, inform and educate is disgusting and self centred. I have spoken to 4 different people and 5 calls all up. Not much more I can do.

Posting on this board provides everybody with a quick and easy (free) way, 24 hours a day, to set things straight. You couldn't get easier. But I bet BCC has gone into CYA mode and probably hand balled it to legal dept or customer relations.

I bet, right now, they think I'm a bastid for doing this, that's most likely how they think, and I bet the other "selected majority" arbo's on the scene aren't far from the same thought pattern.

If I am wrong, then why aren't they posting?

I know if I had the opportunity to inform on an issue I knew a lot about I would. Maybe, it is a boys club and sworn to secrecy? Who knows. But for a tree to stand like that without notice is not on.

This is an ad I run recently, followed by what would happen to a poinciana followed by a sign the council erected for other poisoned trees showing they can whack signs up.

I have so many things to say that I dont even know where to start, so I will just offer a few comments. Too few feel for the environment, etc. Infortunately, trees arent anything to most. These types of actions are rampant, and lots of people actually enjoy doing it to thier trees. Sooo many beautiful oaks, ashes, and many more have suffered this, and not many have lasted too many more years :(

Here in the US we have a program called Tree City USA (http://www.arborday.org/programs/treeCityUSA.cfm). Do other nations have this also? I think its a great idea. It doesnt hold city, county, etc. responsible, but is a good promotional program.

This is great site with some great people! Keep fighting, we can make a difference! Remember, "Trees are tough!"

JPS, do you agree that those internodal horizontal cuts on those ends are good for the tree, or represent meaningful "research"?

Aside from those big stubs above the dead bark, what evidence do you see of deadwood?
