My Elite dealer in Central Illinois always starts the saw before I pay for it & walk out the door
No idea if it's just me however, as I've purchased at a least 13 saws from him over the last 9 years & always pay cash
It's your buying history that gets this special treatment and likely well deserved...... several thousand dollars worth of saws there.

My lawn and garden equipment dealer (full blooded Stihl dealer, too) has sold me two chainsaws, a big backpack leaf blower, and a weed whacker w/ various attachments. The only one that was started before I left was the leaf blower - because I asked. I've also bought a couple of lawn mowers from them and am on a first name basis with the shop manager.

But, I no longer take my tools to them for service because of what they did when I brought my 042AV in for repair. Give you free b&c oil? Hah! My guy offered me an extended warranty if I bought some Stihl oil. Smelled to me like the 'super glaze finish w/ lifetime guarantee' they try to sell you with a new car...but I bought the oil.

Only bought one new saw. Dealer added fuel and bar oil, started it up, let it run a minute, gave it a couple revs, shut it off and handed it over. That was it.

Honda generator at the same place, same thing.

This is legit. Saws for homeowner use get their warranty doubled with the purchase of Stihl oil or premix.

So, you sell a saw. The customer wants it tested in a log, filled with oil, whatever. Then , he decides he does not want it for whatever.
You have a used saw.

Just to make it clear... I don't think I'm maybe referred to "dumb as a stick of wood." Sure I got many other issues, but I guess I'm not getting where or who you are addressing this comment.:)

I arrange ahead of time what chainsaw I want to buy, most likely it has been out of stock and it is put in the order list and what bar and chain I want. Dealer receives the order in and contacts me and lets me know I can come pick it up ( he is not in same town). Before pick up the dealer assembles bar and chain and adds some bar oil and fuel, that is still in the saw when picked up, and runs the chainsaw for any issues.

I arrive and pay for chainsaw and chit chat swapping stories for a while. The deal is done, the chainsaw is mine. That is when I ask permission to burry the bar in their log to set rings and double check cutting performance and anything not right. Then I take chainsaw home.

I'm sure if there was a defect at that point it would be happily addressed. I would not have any buyers remorse or change my mind. I guess some would try to weasel out of the sale at that point, but dealer would say sale is final, sorry.

As a side note, Dealer did have a exploded piston on counter and that exploded when they tested a chainsaw. Not everything is perfect from the factory. I'll see if I still have a picture.

I didn't doubt that it was. It did say on my receipt in writing that the factory warranty was doubled. HOWEVER. after hearing horror stories about the way motorcycle and car manufacturers screw new owners with problems covered by the warranty, I'm a firm believer that the best warranty money can buy is the one you never have to use.

Who buys 95 saws at a time? Does someone like Davey Tree or Asplundh buy that many at once? I assumed the big guys would only buy a few at a time - 10 or 20 because of stories I've heard about new tools in storage walking off the premises.

We take saws back within 14 days for no other reason than you changed your mind. Much less running issues, or defects. Seldom happens, but we had a woman before Christmas bought a saw for her husband. They got in a fight, she brought it back. They made up. She came back and got it. Counter man told her he was not doing that paperwork again LOL.
Anyhow, the saws are made in Va Beach, shipped 80 or 90 miles to Hillsborough, another 30 miles to Greensboro. And, they forget how to run on the trip ? Ya'll do what makes you happy.

Some pros want a saw started because they are going straight to a job. Some homeowners want to be shown how to start a saw.

We are instructed to keep the boxes by Stihl

I always get the box when I buy a new saw. Asked my dealer about it and they just put them in the dumpster otherwise.

Times have changed at dealers, I guess. Last Jonsered I bought from a small dealer, now a Husky dealer, put the saw together. He tested it, adjusted it and when I came to pick it up demonstrated the saw, choke, how to start it etc even though I knew all that. Strongly recommended gloves, ear protection and safety glass which I had. Very thorough. He even called me a couple of months later to see how I liked the saw and if I had any problems with it.

Did they ask you what type of user you are? Homeowner, farmer, tree care business, etc? I ask because I had an unexpected moment when I got my wife a 261cm recently. The guy helping with the sale was very knowledgeable (old wildland fire guy) and seemed genuinely helpful and nice. I had told him we occasionally did tree work on the side, but it wasn't our full time gig. For warranty registration (I got the extra gallon of motomix to double it), he put it down for farm use. He explained that homeowner vs farm use or commercial got slightly different warranty treatment...which I had not been told on previous purchases. Something about there being better warranty service with farm use vs homeowner. Has anyone here been or worked for a stihl dealer? Is there any legitimacy to his claim? How would the service differ? Is this only on pro saws? Was he just blowing smoke or is there some unstated benefit to claiming a different use category. I am skeptical, but it also kind of seems like a marker for profiling or categorizing people into groups of assumed knowledge level of ope operation and maintenance. Has anyone else been told similar when buying and registering a new stihl? Or has anyone been on the salesman/dealer side and ever been told anything by the stihl rep?

I've only seen homeowner or professional use on the registration computer at my dealer when buying a saw. I just click homeowner.

Good luck with that. Saw is paid for when you go out the front door with the invoice.
The buyer states that all is acceptable and accepts the warranty conditions before they leave with it.
You pay before the dealer before you even see the box . Dealer rights up invoice you pay they get the saw . Saw is yours before it’s unboxed .

As I said I’ve only bought two new Husky saws at two different dealers . One dealer was a member on this board . My Echo I bought at Home Depot because I had a 20% off coupon and they honored it . That was here is your saw in the box have a nice day

May be your store policy . But every time I go into the Stihl ,husky , echo etc dealer big sign “All sales are final”

Around here that would make you a saw loaning service. You'd sell a pile of saws every Friday and get most of them back Monday. Same with storms.
You would be out of business in short time here . Big storm coming buy a saw and a generator week later take them back . Crap Home Depot and Lowe’s put signs up stating no returns on generators saws and even sump pumps that you can’t return them if bought writhing a certain period before a storm . Exchange only same with Harbor freight

No, we don't do that. We take saws back with some regularity where the buyer cannot start them, usually because of age or health issues. Credit them and sell them an electric . Or, they decide it is to heavy. Too long. But, no they can't go use it to get their work done and bring it back.

It pretty well covers a saw that won't run.
