This guy I sub to has a stock 066. He won't let me open up the muffler 'cause he thinks that will make it run too lean and burn up the saw. He says, "The last time I let someone do that to my saw he 'burned it up'.
I've never ran a saw that has been opened up before, 'cepting when the muffler would fall off the Super 25's. The suckers were loud, but I noticed then how much better they cut. But I don't remember ever burning one up before.
I told him that the carb will have to be re-adjusted after opening up the muffler, but that's about it.

So he's scared to death to touch his thousand dollar saw. I told him it was begging to breath , but was getting starved for oxygen. I also told him I would make this post and print out the responses for him to read. I don't know enough to tell him myself.

So is his saw gonna 'burn up', or whut?:dizzy:

My 066 is opened up as far it can be. He probably burned up his last saw because he didn't bother readjusting the carb, just like you said. The rev-limiting ignition is nice. I'm not worried about toasting it.

I want to open up the muffler on my friend's J-red, but I can't right now because the air cleaner is terrible. Clogs up too easy and too often. I told him we're going to adapt a small engine filter. Should be easy enough. Chrome it up and everything. Maybe an oil bath type. :D

Works for me

I never worried too much, about opening up the exuast of any of my saws,Those that were around for the old kart days, can remember open exausts, before tuned pipes. What burns up engines,as has been said many times on this forum,is lean burn.It is easy as falling off a log, more air, more gas. Al

Just buy the dual port part for the 066 that stihl makes ,they run alot better with that on , tell him that stihl made this so it has to be right

adjust

On one hand the head office says the caps limit adjustment, on the otherhand, the saw must not run too lean. If it does, readjust it.
I think most of them run too lean, and I am a trained professional tech.
Guess they shouln't have sent that removal tool!

By the way, any nody getthe new adjustment guage that fits on the screwdriver yet? I am getting one to hang on the wall.

Side note: Before the Politically Correct wienies jump in about bypassing our Imperial Government's Infinite Wisdom in regulating chainsaw exhaust, consider that one commercial jetliner emits more pollution in one takeoff/ landing cycle than all the chainsaws in the United States create in one year. i'm sick and tired of the PC weinies telling me what they are doing to me for my own good! [/B]

What's your source, Rocky? Persons quoting assumtions as facts is also sickening and tiring. I'm not agreeing or dissagreeing with your statement, but when you make a statement of something that you have not personally measured and then attack others, your credibility would be increased if you would cite your sources. I doubt any tree climbers have studied polution statistics from chainsaws and jet airliners. Before you environmental hacks go jumping on me, consider that one chainsaw creates more polution from one tank of burned fuel than than all the squirrel crap in the country combined. See my point? :)

Hey Butch, tell that dude he's suffering from mental constipation, just as his saw is all pluged up and nowhere to go.
You did your best to enlighten him, but if he doesn't want to listen then that's his baby.
Just as actions speak louder than words, stop talking, but rather let him observe you outcutting his aneamic 066 with your 357.
That will get him thinking.
