If a guy was going to get his first little saw .. what would y'all say about the Stihl 009 vs the Husquvarna 141?

and while we are on the subject. hedge trimmers. Echo vs. Stihl vs. Husquvarna? any comments?

thanks folks for any useful input.

ps. Where's Bob W. these days? Hevent seen a post in at least a week.

Personally, I'd go for an Echo 340. I have a Stihl 011 and I don't care for it at all.

I`ve been looking for a small rear handled saw for my son and I like the Stihl MS180 based on weight, power and features. you can get one for around $200 which isn`t too bad, just haven`t looked into whether or not you are stuck with that crappy .043 gauge chain or if you can run .050 lo pro.

Hi Russ, I have also been trying, very gently to get my son into the firewood business. He just finished high school, working on getting his licence. Think I will brandish an 025, 136 or 346 his way. He's good with money and firewood is worth 75$ for a 1/4 cord and I have the wood coming out of my ears these days.
Not wishing for him to follow in my footsteps, it will give him a feeling of independance. plus he can learn to be a self starter at an early age. He will take a year off before furthering his education.
Oh No! Not another woodtick!

burnaby bc canada,yall... sounds like a transplanted southerner to me. or do yall know how to talk up there too.
think about the poulan pro 220.
u gonna have to lose control of it once before u understand what u can, an can not do with a saw..[also applys to new drivers..] best when u have to give it a sling an haul a--... it be a cheap saw u throw in the creek or wherever it lands.
been there done that.
as to echo. ive heard some unkind comments lately.. but as a whole its normally good bang for u buck,,,and mine are good equipment. good luck. :)

John since I am selling firewood by the piece, 5 pieces for a dollar should I raise my prices to be along with your sons??? or is it a Canadain price gouge. My firewood sales have gone up in the last few weeks.

Here's where I need the help, how much slpit wood free dropped from my bucket would fit into a 8' pick up truck bed. This would be a level load.

Hi John
My requirements for my son`s saw are a little different, weight is the primary concern since he just graduated from kindergarten in June, LOL.

Of the three saws you mentioned the 025 would get my vote unless he has uncharacteristic for an 18 year old, saw finesse. It would be a little more forgiving and still have enough power for him to be productive, especially after "Lambertizing". It could be an awsome firewood machine with a 36" bar full of square ground full skip. :D

Neither one. The 009 is a complete POS (even though new ones are a little better with more power, but still cant cut squat) and the 141 is not a top handle if thats what you want. Plus of course the 009 is way overpriced

For a cheap dependable little saw around $200 I would get a Echo 3450 (3400 for top handle, same engine)

Hey Jimmy it just so happens I have a 011 and a 141. both saws are great but for a little guy I would go with the stihl 011/09. they are very easy to start, far easier than the husky for little hands. As far as cutting wood, well the Husky is a little faster but it is heavier. My daughter occassionally cuts with me she like the stihl, but when I'm limbing I like the 141. Good luck the Hoosier

Sharpen your chain it's a jungle out there!!

H-man, the Echo 340 and 345 are retailing much closer to $300, although one can still get the 340 from CCD for about $232.

If the little Husky 335XPT commercial saw is such a POS, makes you wonder how bad their cheapo consumer saw is.

On eBay they can be found cheaper new in the box, but I didnt realize they had gone up in price that much. I wouldnt call the 335 a POS, it is just inferior to the MS200. IMO a POS is a 009 or 029. I have never seen one negative remark here about a 141, probably due to its low price and people getting what they pay for. The 009 is $50 more than the 141 so I would go with the 141 in this case

Hi Mark, a full size truck box heaping, loose thrown is 1/2 a full cord. Loose thrown 16" split wood occupies 180 cubic ft. for a full cord.
