Needs pic's or it never happened!!!!

Sounds like it is coming right along....

I hear you on the pics, it's starting to come together. The puller was a week behind what the dealer thought it would be, but I guess that is to be expected this time of year with New Years and what not. My 12 year-old nephew was out in the shop with me tonight and I gave him his first saw, just a Poulan Pro 35cc box sotre special I had kicking around in pieces. I eneded up helping him get it together and running so the 044 kind of got pushed back a little. Sure was nice to see the kid'd face when that saw fired up though.

I know what you mean..I gave my bil a 40cc Troybuilt I had in the shop.Well traded it for his non sparking 031..Anyway he was tickled to death for a saw with a hand brake one his kids can run with him..

That's a pretty good trade. Nice to get someone into the sawing. I am hoping the kid gets the sawdust in his viens and the CAD hits him good. He needs a good hobby and some self esteme building, maybe he can find it in the saws. He's a good kid.

I am almost ready to start putting the saw back together. How can I press the crankshaft in without having the tools? It shows in the repair manual to thread a puller of sorts onto the end of the crankshaft to pull the crank shaft into place on the ignition side of the crank case. I can buy the tools if need be, but I don't want to the wait for them, the paint is drying. I have a couple of ideas, but I would hate to break something at this point.

The way I do it is just stick the crank in one half then slide the other half on and use the case screws to pull it all together..You need to center the crank once done..And for that a rubber mallet works well...

The one I did I put the bearings on the crank and then heated the case halves and then put one side in as far as it would go with a lot of force then had the other half heating and put in on and then pulled them together with the case bolts. Pioneerguy had a good thread on putting them together back several months ago.

So you seated the bearings in the case halves on the crank by drawing the case halves together???

I always freeze the bearings and heat the case then install the bearings in the case then the crank and then pull it all together....

Learned a new way I guess....

I seated the bearings on the crank with a socket that fit perfect over the ends of the crank and was on the inside race. I seated them all the way on the crank that way. I was heating the case halves while I did that. I then put one side in first, I don't remember which side I did. I think clutch side. It started in enough to be able to put the other one on without using longer bolts to pull the cases together.

No problem. That way sounded easier to me than trying to get bearings into the case and then half to get the crank in them.

With the right amount of heat I don`t even need to draw the cases together with the bolts/machine screws. I just put a 460 together and the cases just mated right up with a little clunk sound as the bottomed .

I didn't get the case hot enough as I had to pull it in about an inch.

How do you tell that the bearings are seated in the case far enough???

I use the oilier for the one side and I bottom the other out against the case...

I am not wanting to sound like a pain I am just wanting to learn..

Thanks,

I do like you say, put the crank in with the bearing and it will stop when it contacts the oiler. Heat the other side and it will drop down until the cases touch, that is where the bearings are supposed to be, to unload the stress on the bearings just tap the end of the crank on the clutch end with a soft faced hammer or use a brass drift and a steel hammer. That will relieve the stress, same as if you had drawn the cases on with bolts.

Thanks for the input guys. I was thinking of doing it by way of drawing them together seeing as how the bearings are already back in the crank halves. I was afraid of breaking something, learning these saws are tougher than I think sometimes.

I have been heating the case halves up to 250-260 lately and they just shove right into place.

I have been going 200 I will try the 250-260 on the next one...I will assemble the it or way as well and give it a try..

Thanks!!!

I got the crankcase back together tonight. I need to go to bed but I am so wired now that I won't be able to sleep. She went together very nicely. The new paint looks good on her. Hopefully by the end of the weekend, I will have her running. Can't wait.
