First post here and want to say what a great thing it is to be able to reference and gain insight from the experienced climbers on this site. As an aspiring arborist I give my thanks.

Long story short, a family emergency prevented me from returning to a job and finishing up a removal. At the time it appeared I would be able to return the following day and finish. I decided to leave my cmi stainless steel block and loopie as well as my friction saver in the tree. Unfortunately, the prior mentioned family matter has become more serious than first thought.
By the time I will return the loopie/block and fs will have been exposed to 2 days of intermittent rain.

Anything specific I should inspect them for? Anyone have any issues with gear left out in the elements? Should I even attempt tying into the fs prior to inspection?

The possibility of a squirrel chewing on the loopy and any other ropes left in the tree is a better reason for inspecting everything before using it. A little rain isn't anything to worry about.

Thanks for the feedback fellas. Lets hope the squirrels show some mercy.

About a month ago I found a friction saver in a tree I was working on and it looked like it had been there a couple years. It was real stiff and the colors were faded to a point you could hardly tell it actually had colors but it still felt strong. I sure as heck wouldn't use it but it did hold up well considering. I've found a couple pulleys before, you have to cut the slings off but the pulleys were still good.

juttree, you should try to break that thing. Treestuff will break spices for you and measure how strong it is. They'd probably do that old friction saver too. It would be interesting to know how weak it is.

That's pretty cool, I didn't even know they did that. I'd be interested to know the results also, but I don't think I want to send $25 to find out. I'd be more than happy to send you the friction saver if you want to send it to them. I don't have any of the slings I found left, just the pulleys. I'll bet the FS is still strong as he'll. Let me know if you want it, just share the results.

You could use it backed up by another to see what the elements have done to it . Prolly would surprise you how much it may or may not be able to do

Maybe I should just use it as a leader on the end of a rigging line just to see what it can take. Of course I would only use it where there's no targets and rigging isn't even necessary. Really I just kept it for the rings, thinking I might be able to use them for something.
