This past weekend I was sharpening a couple of chains for customers and got a nasty peice of hot metal lodged in my eye. Went to the doctors and got it out, hurt like HELL! They had to drill it out of my eye. I was wearing my trusty safety glasses, but the metal still managed to find its way to my eye. Is there a company out there that sells a decent pair of goggles with perhaps a shatter proof lens? Price is no object.

i don't know if it is applicable here; but i use Bugz (screen goggles) all the time for tree work.

After years of asking; Sherrill started to carry them; #15682 in Sherrill search should take you to :Bugz Steel Mesh Glasses.

They cut down light, and don't fog up! Not for sand or spray applications.

Methoss084,

OAKLEY, go with the M Frames with Heater lenses and you wont ever have that happen again.

http://oakley.com/product/eyewear/m_frame/

I used to work as a machinist (HS DIE) and thats what i wore. I had a few small cutters (solid carbide) break off and smash into them never even made a dent. Oakley actually says "bullet proof at 15 yrds with 12 gauge bird shot". Cant go wrong with them.

personally when i am running a grinder of any sort i prefeer to wear a face shield. it keep the spark off from your face and eyes. i ahve had to go to the hospital before to get a metal sliver drilled out of my eye. i do agree that it is not a fun expierence. but i prefeer the face shield cause i have glasses.

Ouch!! drilled out:eek: That sounds just as painful or worse than the sliver! I've been able to get them off with a quick scrape of a fingernail.

I've got to get a pair of those Bugz goggles. I've had too many chips of sawdust fly around and get right past my safety glasses.

If cash is no object then...Oakley's are great for just about everything. I like the Bugz as well. Like Pioneer, I've had to many chips bypass my glasses and screen. I've had that eye drilling done, not pleasant. Worst part was the patch that forces your eye lid closed. Makes you squint w/the other eye and fall asleep!
Eyes are great things....imagine life without them.

Sorry

CORRECTION: I was confused
Sympathy goes out to Methoss, then to Homey Lite. These are my brothers in optical injury. Pioneer likes the Bugz like I do but, wears them because he thinks chicks dig them. :p

confused,

I think you missed the point. The metal shard must have come in from the side, soemthing that Oakley's may not have stopped.

I sometimes wear a pair of old ski goggles when using our 20000 rpm "Whiz saw" for trimming hedges. A full face mask is even better, but I hate them.

rbtree,

Have you ever worn Oakley M Frames with Heater lenses? If so then you would know that the lenses wraps entirely around your eye socket. I bought them for driving, going north or south you get that sun from the side into your eyes. Well with the Heater lense you dont it wraps all the way around. The lense even goes down to about the middle of your cheek to. Check them out once. I dont buy any other safety lense. Besides that you can switch out lenses. Using the same frame you could have a clear lense for your safety glasses, and then a tinted lense for your sun glasses. Another selling point is that the lenses surpass all OSHA regulations for safety.

The worst part about all of this is that I was stubborn and waited to go to the doctor to get it out. I was always able to get anything out of my eye before, but not this time. They had to drill my eye again the next day with a burr bit to get the "rust ring" out. Tip of the day folks, don't wait to go to the doctors!
I figure that price should be no option for eye protection only because I couldn't imagine loosing my sight. I think I'll also invest in a good face sheild and look at those Bugz goggles in Sherill.:Eye: :Eye:
