Latest news.... I did it, I went out and bought myself a 440 with 20 and 25" bars, so far haven't had chance to try it out in anger - but seems to be ideal for what I need at the moment. The 660 was there on the shelf shouting 'buyme...buyme...buyme...buyme' but I managed to resist it's charms for now....

Thanks for the advice - you were right - I didn't need a loggers saw at the moment - maybe when I get an estate clearing job, 40 beeches to remove completely, then I'll get the 660.

Moldy.

Good choice, Moldy. You'll like it. A good strong runner, and a durable saw.

And that size saw is a must-have.

Nice choice you did well, now open up the muffler so the poor thing can breath!

Don't think a 28" bar would suit a 440 - a bit too under powered?

Stihl only recommend up to a 25" - anyway, too late - I've bought the 25" now - If I find it's ok with this one, I can always buy a longer one...

cheers..

""""I know 3 different companies that use 044's near me and 2 of them run 28" bars on them. The third runs a 25".

I used to run a 27" on my 038Magnum, pulled it fine for 11 years"""""

Ahh... that's it then - prapse I should consider buying a 28 as well... I have no experience in these matters - you lot do - so far your advice has been good - I'll take this as good advice too.

thanks.

I'll have a good look at the hole size... but I don't think over here in europe we have quite the same problems as you in the US do with regulations concerning noise and emissions... don't think our exhausts are restricted as much as yours...

I've been doing a search on the site for exhaust/muffler mods - I read with interest how ingenious you are over there - a few months ago I brazed a piece of tube in the exhaust of one of my 026's - sure sounds different - but I have no way of checking any power difference, other than being somewhat subjective. Anyhow, it looks good...(!)
