I just got off the phone with my groundie and we have already pretty much decided that we will be heading out to Florida to help clean up after Francis. We are lookin to link up with some of you Florida guys who are already established and will have the work lined up. I took a crew out to La. after Lili hit a few years ago and I have the experience in working hurricanes. I flew solo after Lili and broke even and have learned that it is probibly a better idea to link up with the locals and sub myself out. We are pretty much dead serious on heading out tue. or wed. We have the saws, climbing gear and experience to get er done. If any one is needing help out there give me a call on my Cell. (719) 231-5273

I have wondered if this would be the case for me as well Kenn.
It is quiet expensive being on the road.

I certainly dont wan to go it alone.
Right now my first option is to go to the worst places (south of Orlando) and link up with tree men there. Search until I find some using a crane and offer my services.
I expect to spend over $300 (hotels, eats, gas etc.) before I even start to make any money

When I did Lili I took $1500.00 in cash with me after paying for gas in my Bronco and the chipper truck, plus a blown tire in the truck in Texas, and then stocking up on essentials on the way there, I was broke when I finally got to Laffayette. Fortunately I picked up a few jobs chipping brush and then a contract working for a country club. If it wouldnt have been for that we would have been forced to sell all our saws for gas money to come home. Having learned from Lili, its best to go light, just a truck and saws and climbing gear. All the debris gets put on the curb and the city contracts BFI to haul the debris. Thats why I am lookin to link up with some one down there that is already established and all I gotta do is climb and make a few hundred bucks a day. No chipper, no truck, no big crews, Just me and my groundie, some saws and climbing/rigging gear.

Roger that

So far, several climbers have been posting to the frances threads as well as other going down. Nothing definate thou.
I think Tree Junkie, Tree slayer and Daniel are headed to Rockys.
What a dream team huh? Slayer has Peltor mic's could come in handy. Last work he was headed to Jax thou.

In any case up rooted trees would present the most challenge to me during the course of work in the waater logged area. I would be wary of hanging trees with others especially when larger ropes are employed. The water logged Rhizosphere would substainially decrease a trees whithholding capacity of such a large rope and load.

Ive looked for uprooted tree thread with no luck

I figure it will be water logged for a week.

Be safe up there.

I talked to Rocky on the phone about an hour or so ago, He is still hunkered down but said there isnt really all that much damage in his neighborhood. But root upheaval Will definatly be a problem. They have a crane lined up for tomorrow morning, and will start work and lookin at jobs tomorrow. He mentioned that Greg may be the guy to look up since most of the damage seems to be over in his neck of the woods.

I wonder how that saturated ground and a crane are gonna get along. I guess you need a huge one, just to keep it on the road.

Kenn, I was planning on calling you about climbing the 16th-17th or there-abouts. If you decide not to go give me a heads up and I'll see about putting you up a tree.:D

We may be back by then, Not sure. My wife isnt to thrilled at the idea of us heading out. I was planning on coming out and climbing for you during those days, thats when my groundie was gonna be attending the ArborMaster climbing course in Longmont. Every thing is still tentitive, I will keep you posted though.

if you guys get stuck on some work you can't handle me and the UK boys can always come out and show you how it's done me STEPHENBULLMAN and BLUE are only a 7 hour or so plane ride away :D :D

I know a guy who went down and said he was getting $1000 a day to climb. The last I heard from him he said he was comeing home. He it wasn't worth it working those conditions. The heat and humidity was unbearable and then there are the rats, snakes and the brown r? spiders. He said he may stay and see what happens with this next storm.

I'd be down there if I knew for sure I was to get $1000 a day. I hate the heat and the humidity but I could deal with it for the money. Just don't take any pictures cause I am sure I'd be breaking a few rules.

I can handle the heat, snakes, humidity and the brown recluse spiders. I have spent weeks in the Panamanian jungles sleepin on the ground or in a hammock. If I can make $500.00 a day Im down with it for as long as it takes to get er done. When I did Lili I slept in the cab of my chipper truck parked in a public park for 10 days. It kinda sucked puttin on the swim trunks and bathing in a water spickette using a 2 liter gatorade bottle every night, but I have been through conditions 100 times worse than that. To me, it aint no big deal.

Florida authorities have said since Charley that they will actively pursue any report of price gouging. In my mind, $1000 a day for one climber is definately in that category. I'd be very wary of anyone offering that much to a sub. They'll either end up in jail (with you) or you'll never see your money. Caveat empter.

How can anybody handle brown recluse spiders? It eats yur flesh to the bone!

A local climber here in Tallahassee was bit by a brown recluse about six months ago. Rumored through the grape vine, he was out of work for a few weeks and amputation of his right arm was considered. I ran into him at lunch one day and he was stiHl bandaged but told me he was doing easy climbing again.

HERE COMES THE WIND AND RAIN!!!!!!!
