Never saw the practical rigging videos, but did study the book...
Not too impressed with the book, so I opted to pass on the videos.

Also think its good to make a distinction between being a good teacher on the job, and teaching in a formal setting such as a workshop or presentation. The latter requires a great deal more organization and forethought.

I very much agree with your thinking on the financial reality of producing a good educational video... its expensive and the money isn't there to justify an expensive production. It also takes a lot of time that could much more profitable working the trees.

AND there is something more than just that going on.. The arbormaster tapes that I have seen were poorly planned and scripted. A frienc of mine, who is not an arborist but has seen me work a bunch, pointed out that they have a major flaw... If you don't know what they are talking about you won't understand much because they don't explain what and why they are doing. If you can understand what they are talking about, you really don't need them, cause you already know it. Not much practical info there for an educated arborist.
The NAA rigging tapes were a terribly disappointing waste of $160.... Practically worthless.. terrible scripting!!! They coverred so little of a a huge subject, and totally ignored a bunch of crucial basics etc... Might have been better named... "WATCH THREE GUYS CUT A TREE DOWN" I wonder what the budget was on those programs and how much money they've brought in.

For sure, any video project must aheva some seriuos grant money behind it or be a labor of love... OR BOTH!

PS.
I think Mark said the budget on the crane video was under 12K, meaning he's probably got to sell close to 300 to break even... Selling 300 videos is gonna take a lot longer than a 12K tree job!

Like backing the truck right up to the trailer, hitching it up and bringing it along. Go to where it is and hook up....

We had a recent demonstration locally by Bruce Smith of ArborMaster. 1 solid man of mind and body, couldn't think of how they could send a nicer guy out! Built and stable as a massive oak trunk yet the nicest guy with his fair wife right beside him. Adds to the whole effect! Quite a good show too! i wish this stuff was around some time ago, woulda saved me years of evolving on some ideas!

On the videos, same thing; when they came along, i knew most of what they were talking about. My first was from Lanphear of a Mr. Weber, but i still learned a few things. The best use i guess iv'e gotten out of them is showing them to others and going over them pausing VCR to talk etc. i kinda have chosen to support such things; buying the Rigging Software; knowing that it was funding dong a better one, even if i didn't get the best one later. But, then i've kinda worked it to death too, and had specific targets and inquiries to that end when i bought it.

i think the NAA Electrical Hazards etc. has been around, and still makes good points in visual form. The long term run, best for getting their money back.

:alien:

Hey, i might have a screwy avatar; but i'm not the one with some throw back neanderthal looking mo'fo fer avatar!

At least i evolved beyond the TaughtLine Heetch, unlike your Blaster-Buddy!

i'll leave ya be, for a war of wits is not as much fun with one so freakin'feudally armed!

Dang, sorry, i thought i was in da sqwaured circle!
