Its here !

Just as predicted.............. trees and limbs down everywhere, unfortunately mostly pine/spruce. Two streets closed near my house. Power company says over 200,000 customers are in the dark, and may be that way for several days. Fortunately, we still have power, but the generator is ready if needed. Lookin' out the window, i wouldn't be surprised if more are without power before the end of the day.

Did this storm hit Maine as well? My son lives near Portland. I guess I better double my Omaha Steak order this year. Sounds like a dandy winter shapin' up in the east. According to my calendar, this is still late fall?

This storm definitely hit Maine as well, though i suspect Portland, being on the water, got more straight rain and less ice/sleet.

I am loving the automatic standby generator right now. We lost power about 2:00am last night, and it is still off. Not too many trees down in my area just some branches. Lilacs in the backyard are flat on the ground though.

Ice ice baby

It's been a rollercoaster ride up here so far! Yesterday, with a storm forecast, I crawled under the truck too finally replace a starter I've been putting off for ages. While turning the first bolt that has the power cable connector on it, the connector came off in my hand! Hmmmm? could this be th problem all along? Undo the crimp, peel back too some good cable, recrimp, tape up, and bingo, she fires right up! I attach the plow and she ready too go. Enter last night and freezing rain with about a 1/4 inch of ice forming. The wind picks up and I start to get worried for the trees. This morning it's pouring rain and wind but the wind feels like a Santa Ana! Very warm, all the ice is gone and we've dodged a major bullet by just a few miles. Down the coast from south of Bar Harbor, it's a sever icing area all the way too Portland. Heavy rain now but almost 50 degrees! Sheesh. Many in the state (Maine) and New Hapshire and Vermont are without power but no problems thus far. Fingers crossed.

Spoke with people in Goshen, CT. 99% of citizens there have no power and the first selectman has declared a state of emergency and is telling everyone to stay home in town.

Woke up to 8"-10" of white stuff, I think it's called snow. Then it started raining a bit while I was working on the driveway. A bit of a crust and heavy but not too much problem. I guess the ice line is a little farther south. Now it's a blustry snow shower.

Pretty much normal for this time of year.

My generator is nine miles away but the power is fine and the cellar is full of wood.

Just rain here (it was 60º at my house this morning, 40º only 12 miles west).

But lots of it. Thought my sump pumps weren't working when I went to check...then realized they both were running and I STILL had 20" of water in my basement. Gonna have to pull the furnace motor when the flood finally subsides...

Still tons of fire departments calls in my area -- flooded basements, tree & wires down from the just the wind and rain, cars in the water, roads washed out. Had about 4" of rain over the past couple days until 0400 this morning, then another 2" of rain between 0400 and 0800.

Anyway, latest figures I've seen for power outages. These are customers w/o power, so I'd guesstimate three people per customer? So about 3 million out of power:

MA:350,000
NH:326,000
ME:210,000
VT:24,000
CT:16,000

On the CT coastline, we got nothing but lots of rain. Looks like I might be able to get out and do some cutting and splitting this weekend...

Was listening to the radio from Worcester this afternoon -- basically from the middle of the city north and west into the 'burbs was grid locked with trees still coming down, and significant new damage expected overnight as the wind picks up.

The Burncoat section of Worcester, which is also one of the place hardest hit by the Aisan Longhorn Beetle (I believe much of the neighborhood is within the planned "scorched earth" area), is so bad the DPW was estimating sometime mid-day on Saturday before they had all the roads passable to traffic again.

dang... how many pumps do you have? do you keep a spare?

I'd say we got about 6 in of snow up here. I haven't left the house to go into town, for all I know it could have rained down there and flooded, or they could have gotten less snow. Took about 2 hours and 6 beers and the driveway was all shoveled...

dang you work cheap... thats only 3 beers/hour.... :hmm3grin2orange:

Yeah anymore than that and I wouldn't have gotten any work done. I figured go easy on the beer while I'm working, get the job done faster, that way I get to drink more beer and relax by the fire sooner.

Time to get the studs on the bike. Trails should me pretty good this weekend. Only a couple inches of snow would have made them mint.

Rub it in, i've never gotten the opportunity to trail ride in the snow......:help:

Just two...a nice 3/4hp (?) one I keep in a sump, and a smaller, older one that kicks in if the sump overflows...with the two of them running I've never gotten over a couple inches.

Once the ground freezes solid this year I have to take down a couple swamp maples behind my house. Then next summer when the ground is dry I get to rent a backhoe and dig out the line drain lines my Papu put in 50 years ago. He hit a spring when digging the foundation, and that used to be drained by two 1-1/2" iron pipes. They've both now collapsed. Until then, I've been spending an extra $25/month or so in electricty to keep the basement pumped out. I hoping the part that goes under the foundation hasn't collapsed, so I can slide in an 1-1/4" plastic pipe as a "liner." If my repairs last another 50 years, I'll be dead when it needs to be fixed again :)

Some pics from the Globe today. Last one is from Pepperell, friend of mine is a volunteer firefighter there. He said he spent 14 hours on duty with the rest of the department working with public works to clear the roads, 90% of town still without power as of 5pm. Since he disappeared suddenly from an internet chat around 10pm last night, I figure they must've worked till noon.

does your down spouts drain away or drain into the same system? my neighbor had problems with water and he found out the down spout pipes had collapsed and the water ran into the basement

I lost power around 11 last night and like a dumb a$$ I never brought the generator home. So I decide to go down to the basement and fire up the wood stove. I open the door and theres about 10 dead birds in there, so I decide it might be a bad idea to fire the stove up if the chimmeny is potentialy blocked. I have not used the wood stove in two years. Anyways I start hearing trees and branches breaking around the house then they start bouncing off the roof. Long story short when It got light out I had trees down all over including on top of the hood of my Duramax and the wifes Denali. I swore for a couple minutes and then went to work clearing the cars and driveway. After cutting my way to the shop 12 miles away I got the generator, got fuel and got the heat flowing in the house again. About 10 min after I got the power going the phone lines came back on, We took three trees off houses today and have 4 more on houses to do tommorow with the crane. My wife stayed home and forwarded calls to me all day and it was crazy how many trees were on houses and garages. I had to turn people away!! and I hate to do that but there is just not enough hrs in the day. I bet we had 100 calls today and funny enough I only seen one other residential tree comapny out working. There is still no power here, it looks like a ghost town outside besides my house and one of the neighbors with a generator its pitch blk.
