I've seen references to muffler mods but no detailed description of exactly what to do. I must have gotten a WildThing made on a good day because mine has lasted longer than most (heavy homeowner use), but I know it's days are numbered so I figure why not learn a bit more about chainsaws by mod'ing it up a bit. If I ruin it, well then I'm that much closer to buying a real saw! :biggrinbounce2:

So, seriously, are there any mods I can perform on the cheap that will make an appreciable improvement? I've been doing basic maintenance already so looking for something a step up from that :hmm3grin2orange:

Do What to What?

First off, set the Wild Thang down and step away quietly. Now, get that crack pipe out your pocket, and fling it down the holler. You Gotta be a Wahoo fan. Seriously, now I'm through yanking yer chain. There is no better place to be than this sight and the men and ladies on it. Open the muffler up, might be some drilling here, remove any baffles so it can breathe better, polish the intake and exhuast ports. On the intake remove any edges or flashing, and make sure the carb and everthing lines up correctly, You're looking for smooth flow in and out, same as these small block Ford and Chevy engines I love to set up. More flow=more power. I'm an idot compared to most of the guys on here, when it comes to saws, but they will help anyone any way they can. They could get a pissant to cut through a locust post.

sometimes the baffles are directly under the bolts that hold the muffler on and act as a spacer, i've crushed mufflers trying to tighten up bolts with no baffle under them.;)

more power from wildthing

I have a similar saw but mine is black with anti-vibe. Mine was brand new out of the box when I noticed how small the muffler opening was, and that was before I found this sight! So I opened her up, Took the muff apart drilled the baffle hole bigger, leave the baffle in or you will crush the muff then drilled a 1/4'' hole in the corner next to the little slits they use. You will have a dimple about a half inch diam on the front of the muffler drill it out with a half inch drill bit! Then use a washer and piece of screen on it I used a screen from a oil pump from a small block Chevy and brazed it on. It made a world off difference on mine.

I drilled out the baffle, then installed 2 pieces of small steel tubing in the top front of the muffler for exit holes. I welded shut the factory slots in the back of the muffler. get creative, just don't expose the piston to any fresh air.

Excellent input guys, thanks! Any pics of this? Is this muffler advice specific to this saw (you did it to a Wildthing) or just most saws in general?

Try this.......

Disassemble the saw till you get the carb off and can look in at the piston. (go on, I dare you)

Now reassemble the over engineered excuse for throttle cable routing system:dizzy: untill your thoughts of modding this saw subside or you loose your mind.

Either way you come out ahead!:hmm3grin2orange:

WILDTHING??? Take it to the nearest construction site, find the largest dozer operating there (preferably D8 D9 or D10) and bet the operator $5.00 he or she can't Evil Kinevel (jump over your WILDTHING). IT'L BE THE BEST $5.00 YOU EVER SPENT! JMPO :help: :biggrinbounce2:

Find or dig a deep hole...throw saw in....cover...go buy the real saw

You will learn someting from this!

But using a cheap saw to learn you can't go wrong if you burn it up you will learn from your mistake better than burning up a 600.00 $ saw!!I use my little poulan alot now trying to prove to myself it is not too bad a saw and it just keeps going! For what I paid for it it is really good, I have friends that have the home owner sthil's but they never sharpen a chain leave gas in it for a year and they run like crap I could cut faster with a hand saw.But if you do buy a better saw you will see a difference. But you wont hate your Poulan for what it is.

Looks like some of the guys are trying to help you out.
I don't know much about the wild thing, I'm sure you can get some gains out of modding the muffler.
you will also have to readjust your carb, There are limit cabs on the adjusters you will have to pull them off to get a better adjustment.
Lets start get some pics of your saw with the covers off and pull the Muffler off.

My little loud hot-rod craftsman saw usually draws a smile when people stop by the garage, I guess thats what I was really after. I don't take the thing to the woods and try to make a living with it. HAVE FUN!!!!!

I am not sure

Doesn't the Wild Thing have the chrome plated piston and the high silicon aluminum bore unplated?

If so it will be a rather short lived project but a good leaning experience

Thats what it's all about having fun. I didn't think you were making a living with it.
