The whole thing is just to talk to some cool guys who have a ton of experience about my cool new saw.

I have loved every saw I ever owned except my Poulan. I even feel a little jealousy towards the 7900 owners. I'll probably end up with one down the line, but the 372 feels like a rock from a reliability and multiple application point of view.

If you guys are interested, I want to turn this 372 into it's max potential ( so I won't wish it had as much power as a 7900.) Can you guys school me on doing it myself? Your best tricks and prefferences.

Oh by the way, for you die hard Stihl fans, yeah they rock too:hmm3grin2orange:

Sorry, the 066 is "king" do a search for the thread that wouldn't die....what, you didn't vote for it? You don't vote for Kings!!! Besides, it must be King, it doesn't have sheet all over it!!!

If this is not a new saw, try this....

***Note if this is a brand new saw, run it for a year or two before attempting.

Remove the base gasket, remove 1mm off the intake floor and raise the exhaust 1mm. Open the transfers (lower lonly) significantly.

note beware of extreme power increase. Do not attemp if you do not feel comfortable using a die grinder.

otherwise, use the numbers and feel the awesome increase in power. Good luck, one of the best saws made. the 7900 might have more power out of the box, but nothing prefroms like a modded 372xp.l

When you are removing material inside the edge of the ports @ the cylinder wall how do you keep from peeling the plating in the cylinder bore???? do you use a stone or metal tool??????

I use a diamond tip to remove the chrome and then I port with a 1/8 inch burr, with a pencil grinder. If I am doing alot of work (like lower transfers) I will use a stone first and then a big burr with a 1/4 dye grinder.
BTW - Freakinstang's reply was right on the money. Though I might add, you need to check squish after removing base gasket (oh no... I just started another topic). If not sure do a search under "squish"

Good advice Tree.

I have done about 10 of these 372 mods. They measure between .032 and 039 after tha gasket has been removed. Although "I heard of a guy with a 371 tha said a new thinner gasket would not fit---the piston hit. I have done both single ring non epa saws and newer double ring epa saws and have not found any problems. always a good idea to check squish.....

Very carefully. Semi aggressive carbide bur and oil to keep it from clogging. Keep the speed on an air powered grinder about 8-10K. Toos low will take big chips, too fast will take too much material. be cautious....

I modded a 660 last week and it was a very borderline .017. At first I was wondering what the heck was happening, it was measuring .048 on my caliber. Then I realized after a whole bunch of experiments that I had not changed my mm/inch button on my caliber.

STIHL THE SAME, Caught Up with Her Yesterday, Moving game to game, No one standing in her way""""

Remove the base gasket groove the bottom of the cylinder deck ,Dirko sealant Yeah I got ya,,,,check the Squish,,,,,, how do you mark the targeted material removal area and how do you keep the port corridor floors & roofs uniform??? also do you slick/polish the exhaust ports and leave the intake rough just OPENED up?????? :hmm3grin2orange:

Dang Stang, my 372 is new!

So it's a no-go if it's new huh?

I was hoping to have that sickening power that you were talking about.

This thing is still fresh, so why do you stay away from heavy mods? And were those mods within the realm of woods saw reliability?

Thanks Stang

for one Main thing if you mod it,,,,: and it breaks in the first year or so,,,, no one is going to warranty it!!!!! :blob2: :blob2: :blob2: : Yeah it will still be very reliable
