Was at my local hd today stopped in to check out stuff sometimes u can find killer deals on stuff the rent out. Any ways was talking to a guy who was going over a chainsaw that just came back from a 4 hour rental. It was like a 14 inch mikita. He's telling me how ethonal does effect small engines (ok). Takes the chain off throws it in the garbage gets a new one out. I ask why did u just toss that put? Oh we throw them out ever time they come in. My mouth just dropped.

They probably buy 5000 chains at a time for $2 a chain. Even at minimum wage, sharpening a chain would cost more than $2.
Bet ur right didn't think too much about it just thought it was very wasteful but they must put the cost of chain in with the rental

Count the number of stores with tool rental, now multiply the number of people working there, plus the turnover in the department, plus the number of saws that go out each day. How are all of those people going to be trained to sharpen chain? How any of the are capable of sharpening a chain? I imagine the people renting the saws have little to no working knowledge of a chain saw. I have seen people digging post holes with saws, you just know that they demolish a chain in 2-4 hours.

HD does not pay those rental techs a proper small engine techs wage so I really would not trust them to sharpen a chain anyway.

HD has been selling refurb Echo saws that were refurbed by HD techs. Lots of complaints about the refurb work.

There used to be a rental company with an account on ebay I used to buy used Stihl chains from. They installed a new chain every time a saw went out, and put the used one on ebay when it came back. I would get them for roughly half of new, shipping included, and most required very little filing.

Also deals with a lot of customer complaints...."left here with a brand new chain" plays better than "we sharpened it before renting it out". Makes me wish I had a connection to collect those used chains!
They are so wasteful it isn't funny!!!
Bought my Brand New 6401 Makita from HD Rental few years back for $150. Kid working the desk said" you don't want that saw it's all messed up!" Looked at it and the chain was on backwards!! I kid you not! Saw was brand brand!! Walked out with my now 79cc Dolkita for $150!!!
