A pic or two will say a thousand words. Is your clutch spinning off?
the clutch should be holding on the sprocket. If it is coming off on the saw side there should be a washer there to keep it on, but like I said a pic would help me know for sure what is going on.

why are you called homelitejim but have a Mac fore your avatar

900g

Have this one on its way to Australia at the moment. She is a Homelite 900G and in pretty good original shape. A few little pieces here and there and she will be complete. It was good to score an original saw of this series which has the original large ribbed muffler assy complete with the hand guard. Many of these saws have been fitted with the smaller type muffler assy these days.

Here are some pics the PO forwarded to me before sending the saw.

Regards,

Chris.

squirt mix in carb and try to start -- if you get one going you will know why he likes them -- I forgot to mention even though they are the same type saw their are slight differences in them sometimes -- like air-filter covers - mufflers -carb linkages small things like that

Update: Got (1) of the 360's goin Saturday. Switched out the ignition off the donor saw and poured some mix down the carb.......Walla! The ole' gal came alive. Would not run from the fuel tank. Removed the carb and intake.....Boot was dry rotted and falling apart/impulse line was split. Ordered a new boot and gonna get a carb kit., replace the fuel filter, new pulse line and it should be ready to roll.

I think you just set the record for the world's smallest cookies.
Very cool tool!

Thanks Lee. I thought that there would be a few of us in the running for this one, as she is a nice original machine that appears to be pretty well unmolested.

The muffler and guard were definitely the items which I was chasing when buying this saw.

Looking forward to finding out about those 'irons in the fire' of yours!

Regards,

Chris.

Do you remember this little jewel? Well I finally got a roller nose tip for my 46" homelite bar. Now I have to decide whether to put on .404 or 3/8 chain on it as I can get both. The saw is a Homelite 770D which will have enough umph to pull it through our PNW soft woods.

Looking good Jim! I vote .404. On that saw, with that bar..............well .404 is just "right".

There's a small plactic knob with a line or arrow (can't remember which) that you turn towards the different numbers. Turns a valve that controls the auto oiler flow as you mentioned. I'm betting your saw was sold without the valve, and had the rubber cap instead.

Homelite just used the same handle casting for models with and without the valve. They put a blockoff cap in place on saws that didn't have the valve. I wouldn't sweat it. The valve doesn't really do much anyways. I don't have an IPL for that model, but I'm sure somebody does........................and both types are surely illustrated in the IPL.

Got the valve from Chainsawlady today. It is exactly as you describe.

Well here it is, might need a little tuning, me and the saw, and I need a bigger piece of wood.
