Well, after putting it off for awhile I got the old Homelite Zip running. It isn't the most powerful thing in the world but if you have enough time it will cut wood. Really nice bar and chain..I'll probably put them on something a little more modern and put a bar on it that's a little more era correct. I think someone has put a 3/8 chain on it but I haven't measured it to be sure. This thing would probably run better with a carb rebuild and maybe a new spark plug because it pops and cracks occasionally when you put it in wood too fast. Also, maybe it seems slow because I'm used to newer saws.

I like and great Job!

I'm sitting here at work looking at IPL's and every one of them shows a plunger for manual overide. Is it possible that something went wrong with the plunger so they just put a bolt in it's place?

If I scratch my head anymore, it's gonna start bleeding!

It's been kinda hot so I haven't been messin with the saws much. Just replumbed the house and took a couple buckets of copper pipe to the scrap yard. Long story short, look what I bought at the scrap yard for $25, Joe

XL-101 Refurbish.

Actually got this thing View attachment 189226 to sort of run this evening. It stumbled along for a minute or so. R and R'd the carb again because it was way rich. Can't tell if my magneto backplate repair with J B weld is successfull or not. View attachment 189228 Them screws ain't never coming out of there again.

It would be nice if it had a throttle rod. (hint).

On a which model Homie? I wouldn't bet against it.

I have an extra XL-101 plunger w/spring if you need one. Should also fit an XL-12 or Super XL Automatic.

Sorry, it's a super xl auto. Got home last night and it appears that is exactly what happened. The check valves appear to be gone as well. The bolt that was in place of the plunger had an o-ring on it, which I thought was wierd.

Parts are plentiful for those saws...nobody should have to repair one like that, unless you live in Cuba!

Sorry I left out a couple minor details. The Homelite is a Super Wiz 66, and the pioner is a 700D, Joe.

Are you gonna try to get either one of them going? It's kind of thrilling to see one of those old saws roar to life again after several years (decades) of inactivity. My old Homelite Zip starts and idles as good as some of the new saws, I guess it's probably because of the mild timing.

Started tinkering with the Wiz I picked up yesterday. It's amazingly clean on the out side, all of the screws and bolts came out easily. The piston looks bright and shiny through the muffler. Took the B/C off. It's still locked up tight. I'm gonna fill the cylinder with Marvel Mystery Oil. Is there anything that could lock it up tight besides the internals, anything in the starter or recoil? Thanks, Joe.

Did you post a pic of that saw in this thread a page or two ago? The early Super XL Auto saws came that way from the factory. Auto oiler pump type drivecase. Slot-head screw plug (with o-ring) in place of the manual oiler plunger assembly. I have one of those. Have seen a few others. Tuned up a red/black one for a fellow about a year ago. Never had seen a red one of those variants (auto oiler only) before...........only blue/white like mine and the saw pictured recently here. You can put all the manual oiler guts into those saws if you want.

Edit:

Here's your pic. Yep, that's from the factory. Looks alot like my saw. Same paint/deacal setup.

Just a few pics of the newest member of my family. Through a chain on it last night and I'm really surprised with how it cuts. Does a lot faster than my Craftsman 42cc saws!
Were bucking dogs available for these saws?

I had an old McCulloch that was locked up at the starter. Had corrosion so bad it wouldn't turn over. After I fixed the starter it turned over fine. I don't know of anything other than the clutch being stuck and the chain rusted to the bar, that might keep it from moving. I've never had both clutch and chain both stick but I guess it's possible.
