did that, is this one rare? Or a dud.

Good saw. Not a dud..............but not rare either. Same basic 5.01ci saw as an XL925. Minor differences. Not as common as the later models of this series, but not to the point where there's a value difference. If the full wrap bar wasn't crunched up, it would have been worth as much as the rest of the saw. Looks like the tank body was welded and sealed at some point. Probably got busted up when the handlebar got banged up.

Yeah, it's quite used, and painted in some sort of Husky orange. The worst oddity is the seal weld ALL AROUND the crank-cases! The weld follows the case seam, so I don't think it was to repair damage. I can't believe the time spent to weld up the entire saw, instead of using sealer. Probably was done many many moons ago. When a repair guy had time. Lots of time. No sealer. And lots of time. I'll run it till it dies, then hang it in the shop.
Just curious, did Homelite build the same saw year after year, and just give them a new model number? Kinda like the 80cc macs?

The tank may have broken at the seam after some heavy impact or other trauma (such as the saw getting ran over by a dozer).

As for the welds.......maybe the guy was showing off. I wish I could weld magnesium like that, with no leaks or burnout...:jawdrop:

Homelited did indeed make many many variations of that saw, from the XL700 through the Super XL925 over a period of around 20 years. They made both 77 and 82cc versions. Some had decomp valves, some didn't. Starter housings, ignitions, manual oiler pump locations, and other things were changed throughout the series. Homelite also made a water pump with this power head, as well as cutoff/demo saws (XL88, XL98, etc).

Bummed out. I took the 925 to cut firewood this morning. Yesterday, with the 16" bar and a used chain the thing cut like a monster. Today with the 20" bar and a brand new chain I had to push on it to cut. It was throughing pretty nice chips, but I shouldn't have to push this saw to get it to cut. The tree was a big dead White Oak that didn't have a branch left on it less than about 6" in diameter. I used the MS290 to buck all the limbs into firewood, got a good cord and a half. I used the 1050 for the notch cut, and the 36" bar didn't quite make it all the way through. We're going back tomorrow and I'm going to try milling up some of it. I guess I'll have to cut some of the live edge off because the 36" mill isn't big enough. If I get the energy I'll TOUCH UP MY NEW CHAIN. Got some nice firewood and will get some nice slabs, but I'm still bummed about that chain, Joe.

Thought I should separate this question from my other thread, so it wouldn't get missed. I've found a fellow that has a 5-30 for sale, it's complete, with what looks like about a 2' bar and helper handle. Looks to be in pretty good shape in the pic. It's a long ways from home. I forgot to ask if it turns over. I guess I will call back. Only bad part is I have to take the other 5 saws. One XL12, a Dayton, a Remington, an Eager Beaver, and one marked MW (maybe Monkey Wards?) He wants $200 for all. The 5-30 looks like a neet saw, what's it worth by it's self, maybe just to sit on the shelf? Or give me a hi-lo on parts saw versus runner. Thanks, Joe.

Well it does come with an Eager Beaver...What are you waiting for

What brand/model ?

Brian, I can't believe I didn't notice, it's Oregon low kick back. I buy individual chains at this local Ace Hardware all the time, and have never grabbed an anti kick back one before. I bet I check the next time. That is actually the first one I've ever seen with that stupid rolled over drag tooth. Thanks for asking or I might have never noticed. Actually I would have noticed because I was going to touch it up later tonight or in the morning, Joe.

I called back about the 5-30 and he said it's misssing the plug wire and he wasn't sure if it turned over. He's out right now and as soon as he gets home he'll check and call back. But, he did remember the XL12 had spark and turned over fine.

Briantutt, he said the Eager Beaver has spark too. If I buy the mess you want me to drop kick the Eager Beaver to you? I'm sorry, I ment "drop Ship" to you, Joe.

They call that Vanguard. It came on my 5100s. I thought it self-fed okay when sharp and cut very smoothly.
Maybe you got one that was made at 3:50 on a Friday ?
I'd sharpen it and check the raker height. I think they're worth keeping, at least as a backup chain.

well, I'll change the subject.......

I've got 3 Homelite's that I've resurrected from death. First one (my first saw as well) was a d3350b I found at a flee market. They said it was dead and I offered $35, which they took. Being my first saw, and actually getting it running, I'm quite proud of it. Only took a $40 coil to fix it. Since then, I've modified the Zama carb, muffler and got the thing running very fast. I'd walk over quite a few saws to get to my 3350.

Grandpa gave me an XL and a 340 which I got both them running also. XL too heavy and slow for my liking. The 340 is ok, just a little loud.

my $.02

Well just got this old thing running today. It must be an older one with wick fuel filter/line in the gas tank and the weird plug/wire combo. Ive heard of the plug wire with a stud in it but this is the first Ive run into. Luckily it had spark and all I needed was to swap carbs with a sxl. It needs a good cleaning.

As a parts saw with the bar you mentioned, I'd say $20-$100 for a 5-30 depending on condition (big factor is the P/C).

I never turn down XL12's if I can get them cheap enough. They're usualy free-$50 depending on condition. I've gotten all but two of my saws from that series for free. One SXL-AO I paid $25 for (CL ad), and I paid a bit more for a really sweet blue XL12 with a newer SXL P/C swapped into it (feebay).

The Remington could be ho-hum, or really cool depending on the model. Same on the Montgomory Wards, as that could be an old Echo, a ho-hum late model Mac (such as an eager beaver or Mac320), an ancient Mono (like my Wards WD60), or a Remington (like my MW branded SL-9). Need more specifics before we can 'value' estimate either of those saws.

The EB saw is something you leave outside so somebody steals it instead of your good saws...:D

Glad to see you got that early XL12 running. I have one Super XL12 that has the same plug cap/spark plug setup you mentioned. Takes a Champion TJ8J plug. I'm going to swap caps on my saw so it takes a 'regular' plug. Already sent my plug to a friend here on AS with a McCulloch BP-1 project (takes these same goofy plugs).
