The end result of 2.6oz of oil in 2 gallons of gas

attachment.php

Saw used less than 3 months, toasted due to 1 gallon size bottle of mix oil in two gallons of gas. He pitched it after hearing the price of parts and labor,
can't blame him.

You have that backwards Ralph... it was running at 100:1...

Anyone with a bad cylinder - just buy another entire motor - $75-$90 in good shape...

As for the special ring compressor - I did several without it and they went fine, then two were a bear... no idea why... I now just use the factory compressor and no issues..

OOoo... expensive mistake.. good for you, though! I do see that the 290s get pretty shady reviews on the site..... my take on it is that there's probably nothing wrong with them, there are just better saws to buy for hard use... at a greater price, of course. I'm about a 6 or 7 cord per year guy who also does milling (with a different saw, of course) so a 290 and the other TEN saws I own oughta get me through. It looked like a fun project and thirty or fourty bucks for rings and a carb kit should produce a nice saw for using or selling for a modest profit. I DO find that once I work on them that they are pretty hard to let go of.

Same here Lake. I'm jealous of Ralph having it so easy without that compressor. I did one and it gave me a fit. I've used the compressor ever since. Ralph got lucky, durn his hide,LOL

Andre They can take some serious pounding

even though you have seen they are not the crowd favorite here,,,,,
But if you take care of them with proper maintenance, fresh fuel, and a sharp chain they are not bad saws,,,, and a mild little muffler mod wiill wake them right up,,, since ya already have the 290,,,finish your topend job, find a 18" bar and a sharp chain, mod the muffler and I bet you will be surprised,,,,, Stihl hasn't sold a bazillion of them because they are total junk!!!!!!!!!!!:notrolls2:

Do you have a Napa part #, or do they carrie an after market for the Stihl.(sorry for the dumb questions, new at this.)

nice thing is that they use the same size bearing on both ends, no big or little end to deal with.

"At least with the 455 I can undo 3 screws, take off the top cover and brush off around the cylinder fins. How long does it take you on the 290?"

My mistake, I read the above post of yours from another thread and thought you owned one, cuse me. However, the man asked for some sincere help with his , he didn't ask for a smart azz answer from someone that doesn't like the 290. If ya don't like it thats fine but spare the bull when someone is asking for some mere help.

And no one else on here is a smart azz?

Dont start on me when I try to add humor, last time I checked no one made you God.

P.S. : The 290 is still a piece!

Ok, so today I was brutally humiliated. I was one jolly old chainsaw mechanic going into my shop and I was furious coming out. There was no WAY to get that piston back into the jug and I managed to bust a ring trying! At 15 bucks a pop and another drive into town, it was frustrating at the least. I guess I'm odering a ring compressor. Begleytree, you totally dodged the bullet!! However it is you hold your mouth, keep doing it.

I can't really understand that. Mine just about fell in. Like was mentioned earlier, the jug has kind-of-a-ramp leading into the bore. Get one half of the ring in the bore, use a small screwdriver to tease the other half in.

All I can think is the gap of the ring wasn't lined up with the pin that keeps it from rotating.

Anyway, sorry you had trouble. If you were close I'd give ya a hand.

I'd like to say "told you so", but that's not cool:hmm3grin2orange:
p.s. you can buy three compressors for the price of one ring.;)
