How to disassemble a 290....Has anyone suggested a 20lb. sledgehammer??
Sorry...I couldn't resist.

I remember my Dad "disassembling" a Lawn Boy with a spud bar once. He tried to swing it around against a tree trunk but it was too damn heavy to get good speed so he "fixed" it with a couple whacks from a spud bar. We had that mower about 5 years before it got the best of him that day. It was in the shop more times than all the other mowers he's ever owned combined.

mine 2

I can't really understand that. Mine just about fell in. Like was mentioned earlier, the jug has kind-of-a-ramp leading into the bore. Get one half of the ring in the bore, use a small screwdriver to tease the other half in.

All I can think is the gap of the ring wasn't lined up with the pin that keeps it from rotating.

Anyway, sorry you had trouble. If you were close I'd give ya a hand.

jim

just lined the ring end up with the fixin pin started the farside up the ramp and a carb adjusting screw driver with a little finessing and it was time for the next ring,,,, Sorry Andre!!!!!!:blob2: :blob2: :blob2:

you can also use a ty-rap cable tie around the ring,,, oil it with premix and push it in,,, the tie will slide down to the next ring,, reposition and do it again tghen cut it off with wire cutters

Sorry, but when we talk about the 290 type frame its like talking about replacing a rope on a Weed Eater brand trimmer.

Stihl was always the top, they asked dealers on how to improve their product, then they stopped, then the crap came out. Then the distributor wanted you to sell the MORE of the crap and didnt care you sold the good stuff!

I'm sorry if I am biased, I love the good Stihl saws, I just think they went too far to be like the Homelite/Weedeater/Poulan/etc. on their cheap saws.

Maybe I am victim of a bad distributor, but one thing remains - There is no comparison between a pro Stihl saw and a cheap one. Husky has screwed up too!

Every saw Manufacture has good and bad saws, the O29/290 is not one I would call a good saw and I would not take one home!

If you think I am wrong then thats OK, I will spend my $$ more wisely!

I am partial to certain saws, not one saw brand! I still have some Stihl saws of my own, and many others.

Best way to disassemble a Stihl is to run it! The vibes will do the rest!

Husky to the people!

I think you guys keep missing the point of the MS290.

Stihl doesn’t build this saw to compete with the 361, but that’s what all you guys keep comparing it to. I think they keep it around because it compares price-wise to a Husky 350 or 353.

The question shouldn’t be “would you rather have a Stihl MS290 or a 361?”. It should be “would you rather have a Stihl MS290 or a Husky 350?”.

Yeah, it weighs a bit more than the 350 but it’s also got 25% more power.

I’ve got both a Husky 350 and a Jonsered 2150, but now that I’ve got the 290, that’s what I grab.

Comparing the 290 to the 361 doesn’t make sense.

Jim

I didnt compare it to a 361 but why are you comparing a 290 to a 350? the 290 is what, a 56 - 57cc machine and the 350 is a 52cc. It would compare with a 455 Rancher better, and both machines are not on a great platform.

It does the job, but they arent built like the "pro" saws.

You mean, like a harvester owner looking down his nose at OP's puny pro saws?
Harvester operators don't have to worry about white seat syndrome from vibrations...or white finger.
Who cares how much they weigh?
Production cutting is much faster.
Kickback is not an issue.
Fuel mix is not an issue.
Etc. Etc. Etc.

Better yet...The 455 is the same weight, costs more and has less power.

The most relevant Husky to compare it to, probably is the 460 - but then the 460 most likely is a much better saw, but may cost a bit more.

The 290/310/390 vs 361 thing is about trying to convinse people to spend a bit more money for a much better product............ ;)

Home Owners Love them!!!!!!!!!!!

Correct,,,,And Stihl sells a bunch of them,,,,,and if your sharp enough to read and comprehend the owners manual,,,then follow the instructions and maintenance schedule and keep good fresh fuel, bar oil in it,sharp chains and a realitivly clean airfilter,,, They will last a long time as so will the 455,,,,

Is everybody Happy now????????????????:bang: :bang: :bang:

If your comparing the 290 vs 361 pricewise. I think it amounts to a lot more then a bit more money. ($329 vs $549)
