Another reason I don't pay for wood (from a tree service to sell as firewood) is the market value here is low compared to other parts of the country. I get $150/cord of mixed wood and $175/cord of oak picked up. Delivery and stacking is more. And, cutting wood is what I enjoy the most; so I don't want to pay somebody to do the part I like the most. I will pay somebody to stack however :)

I sell silver maple for $180/cord. Lots of guys on AS get logs delivered rather than harvesting it themselves. I'd rather drop it myself, but then again I don't have to deal with the brush, and that's a bonus as well.

All I can say is be careful! Your a nice person with a big family depending on you. . . some of that wood is massive and you do not need to get injured.
You might wanna call that SuperSpliter owner guy and have him pack up his mobile service vehicle with a welder and grinder and a torch setup and 50lbs of fresh 7018 welding rods and what ever parts he can place in the mobile service vehicle. . .have him camp out at the local Motel 6 until your done with the big stuff that ends up having 8 inch hidden cross branches.

I'm with Woodtick, cut it 16" long and start splitting slabs off the side all the way around with your Fiskars. Noodling makes such a mess with all the noodles and really does cost you a lot of firewood. I've done this with oak blocks 3-4' in diameter and a 5 footer shouldn't be any different. If you come to a big knot or where a limb grew out then you might have to noodle but the straight grain splits easy by hand. I've done it by hand for years and still do and I'm 66 years old now.

Big score this week- tree service asked if I wanted oak. Said he wanted some money for it. Of course I said 'yes.'

Two large trees being removed across town. Here are most of the first batch (3 dump trucks and a big trailer load):

I also dropped a partial load to a neighbor.
That pile is about 7' tall. I still have yet to get the main trunks and upper branches of part of the second tree. All this for $200.

I Love, absolutely LOVE getting a huge pile of oak dumped in my yard. 200 is a good price. And you pay to get into the movies or go golfing, what the hell do you get? An experience that last a few hours? A pile of wood is days of joy! just dumped right in your yard!! Oh buddy, I need to make a phone call....

Brenndatomu, yes, I feel rather guilty about it. I've been watching that tree die for a few years now and really wanted it. $200 is a great price for that amount of wood. Here are some pics of the next 2 loads.

Hey Unc, What type of Oak is that Burr, Red?
Great job man!

Unk, if we were closer I would bring over my big heavy Swedish saws and help you cut them up. They all need some fresh gas run through them anyways. The 298XP I have has a 36" bar and would have a field day with that stuff. You could use the 285 but the 24" bar would be a little short for the bigger stuff. Sounds like you are going to need to upgrade to that monster 110cc Echo. :baba:

I took a peek at it, but I bought a dump truck earlier this year and I'm out of money. Come on over! I bet you could use a break from the Northeast traffic.
