Just wondering what the difference is between the two ......other than 1cc.
Which one do you pro's recommend? Also what about the 357? I only cut a few cords of wood per year.

460/359 The 460 is in the home owner class. It has a plastic case, screws that hold the air filter cover down, not sure about a side access chain tensioner? The 359 is pro quality magnesium case, snap style air filter cover, side access chain tensioner. All the attributes of the 359 apply to the 357. Both the 359 and 357 make excellent saws. I don't know if the marginal amount of wood cutting you do would warrant a pro series saw. I like both the 359/357 but I won't knock the 460 either for what you are going to be doing. Spike likes em, they can't be all bad :fart:... Guess it depends on how much money you want to spend, and if you ever intend on doing more with the saw.

I have never seen or used a 460 before but just love my 2159 aka 359 it is my favorite saw. I was able to cut some cookies with a Jonsered 2156 and unless someone had a stop watch I could tell no deference between the two.
The 460 does not have a magnesium case I know that much. Just see if the dealer will let you try both saws or go with the one that feels better. But for me if there is not a huge price diff I would go with the 359. By huge I mean a 100$ or more

maybe a difference of opinion, but I've never considered 460 a homeowner class saw. IMHO it's almost too much saw for most homeowners.

whereas 359 is borderline homeowner/pro

How good is a 460? Sorry I don't want to steal anyones thread! But have a good friend that cut's about two full cords a year and I see this saw often on special. It looks pretty good on paper and if you can get a deal on it why not. Plus he will take care of it and it should last at least 15 years. Hell I got over 15 years on my little mac and cut a lot of fire wood.

I'd go for the 359. They respond well to muffler mods and is pretty much a pro saw. I had a 455 rancher and i was a turd box, the 460 is just a big version of the 455.

I live in the woods and have used my 359 for about five years around my house and property without any issues. I try to do the routine maintenance, use fresh fuel and good 2-cycle fuel oil and good bar/chain oil. I toss in a new spark plug annually (or more if heavy use), keep the filters clean, etc. It is just my opinion, but I think the most import thing is to keep the chain sharp. A dull chain will beat you and the saw to death, IMHO.

The 359 has cut a variety of wood types up to about 30" diameter. I isn't real heavy. I use it with either an 18" or 20" bar on it. I also have a 55 Rancher that works fine for my purposes. I bought the 359 because a neighbor was selling it for the right price and I know how well he had babied it so it was like getting an almost new saw. But the 55 Rancher hasn't missed a beat when I have used it. I would say they are equal in the cutting department. Since the 55 Rancher has now been discontinued (the new one is a 455) if you shop around a bit you might be able to find a very nice used one for a very affordable price.

I think I paid about $200 for the 55 and about $275 for the 359 (both came with storage/carrying cases, oil(s), extra chains, instructions, etc.).

Good luck with your search. I'd be curious to know what you get and how it works out.

For me this is a no-brainer.

The 359 has a bit more power probably even with E-tech, but it also is a pro-quality saw, as some others have said.
They weight about the same, but at least in my hands, the 359 feels much better - but I have never cut with any of them.

Try to handle them alternately, with the bar you want to use.

An E-tech 359 will "need" the muffler changed to a standard one, which will add slightly to the cost, unless you mod it yourself.

Imo, the Dolmar PS-5100 is a better alternative than both, unless you will be cutting with long bars in larger wood.........

Yes they really do well with a muffler mod. I did one to mine and it really woke it up I was happy with it stock but the muffler mod was very noticeable

Unless if you are like me and have no dolmar dealers or support near you.

+1 Both will easily do "a few cords per year". ;)

I must warn you, if you read more than a few threads here, you will think a 361 is your only true choice!

The closet one is about 1000 miles away, but a 5100 for the Witch will probably arrive here pretty soon, from the US......

We can "afford" waiting a while for parts for that one, as we are fully covered by other saws, really - and my Husky dealer will work on it, if needed.

It really is, but I planned to warn him up a bit, before saying so......:greenchainsaw: :hmm3grin2orange: :hmm3grin2orange: :rockn:

You spoiled it, grrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!

To tell the truth, I didn't intend to mention the 361 at all, in this tread.....

I will do all the work myself if needed and it is off warranty. But the closest parts source for me is eastern Canada 3000km away! I bet the witch would like a 346 more? But then I always say get what you want!
Funny how you are so close to Germany yet have to get the saw from the States. I like to travel and see this all over the world. The strange thing is I can find Rifle parts and accessory's cheaper here than if I drove to Montana! I will never under stand how that works!

I tried to tell her that, but she wants the 5100HS, after being here for a while.....:biggrinbounce2:

to me a 359/361 class saw is an in-between size saw. an excellent all around saw if you can only have one saw.

but 359/361 is too slow getting into larger wood. whereas a 460 does fine in all but really large wood. lots of pro's that primarily use 460's w/660 only coming out for big stuff.

my favorite is getting to be 064, which weights 1lb or so more than a 460 w/almost the power of 660. that is if you don't go nuts with a 4 foot bar. 24in bar is what my 064 wears to keep the weight down.

The 460 we are talking about here is the Husky 460, not the Stihl 460. Not knocking the Stihl 460 in the least. It is more beast than this fella is looking for.

I see you are thinking stihl not husky. I know what you mean by in between size I find my 2159 will do for almost all my cutting but will grab my 044 if it is big wood. And once in a wile will take the big mac out out if I have something really big I want to cut or just have fun.

I was wondering when we'd have a post where this Stihl 460 - Husqvarna 460 confusion would come up. It's been at least a month since the last one.
