Can you run a 24 inch bar on the 359 or 460. Not that I need one.

Don't know about the 460, but yes you can on the 359. Although that's pretty much the limit. You would want full-skip chain for sure. I wouldn't do it all day every day, but for occassional use, it'll get 'er done.

to me a 359/361 class saw is an in-between size saw. an excellent all around saw if you can only have one saw. .....

The 359 isn't really comparable to the 361, unless it is modded, and the 361 not - 357xp is the Husky to compare with the MS361.

The gap between the 2 saws when modded is not very astounding. Alas back to the topic of the thread.

How do you know which Husky's have the e-tech engine? The Husky web site or Norwalk Power Equip dont mention this. Sounds like you want to stay away from the e-tech.

for only a couple of cords a year
I wouldn't buy either saw until I visited home Depot and priced the used rental Makita 6401 for 205 bucks.
but thats just me

Ive already got a couple of decent chainsaws, a Husky 345 and a Mac. Just looking to move up to a bigger one. I have property in East Ky (deep in the boonies) and have ran into situations that required a bigger saw.

The 460 we are talking about here is the Husky 460, not the Stihl 460. Not knocking the Stihl 460 in the least. It is more beast than this fella is looking for.

Holy Crap you guys were starting to scare me a bit. I was thinking 460 a homeowner saw?!!!:dizzy:

I was headed for a 460 when I visited here and got talked into a 359. For the $50 extra it seemed a no-brainer. And there was a non-cat muffler in the box for it too, so $90 I guess. Still less than a 455 rancher from the big box store tho. Very happy with it. Next: modding the muffler!

You guys are evil! ::cheers:

I've owned both 359 and 359 etech. I hated the etech. It was nothing but problems. Since then, I took it back and made sure that I got the NON cat 359. It runs like a different saw. I've only used it for two seasons, but like it lots. Its easy to handle, ergonomic I think is the word. Balances well with a 20" and has a wide range. It keeps up rpms in large seasoned hardwood with a sharp chain.

I can't comment on the others, but like some have already said, one of them is aweful big. I think I'd get tired of the extra bulk and weight if I had to use it for anything less than full time felling.

Hope this helps,

Noah

Non sponsor sites will get you smacked across the knuckles!

California dealers will be E-tech saw. I got mine from Colorado and it was E-tech too. Call the dealer and ask before you order is my suggestion (I didn't, cost me an extra $50 for muffler). Bailey's, or Amick's are both sponsors (links at top of home page) and will gladly answer your questions. The difference in cost in the 2 saws (359 or 460) is nominal until you add non-cat muffler. If non E-tech I recommend the 359, I'm overjoyed with mine. The 359 full of fuel and oil balances well with the 20" Husky (Oregon) bar. I purchased a titanium 24" (Carlton) bar from Bailey's for $20 (slightly nose heavy but easily handled). Be warned: the Carlton uses 81 drive links, 3 less than most 24" bars, course chains are $3 less too. My Pioneer used 81 drive links so I have plenty of chains.

I know I'm jumping in late here, but I want to add a couple things.

The 359 E-tech may be built better, but the 460 X-torq definately runs better. As to the power ratings, it should be noted that when Husky added the cat muffler a year or so ago, they did NOT change the power rating. In fact, they have yet to make such a change on any saw that received the cat. And it is obvious from many posts, some in this thread, that the power is quite different. In my mind, it would be better to just go up to the 357XP, instead of having to buy the regular muffler for the 359.

The 359 isn't just a dog in the wood, it's a dog in the showroom as well. This is mostly due to who the 359 customer always was. 359's were almost exclusively bought by guys looking for a step up from a 50cc class saw with an 18" bar for personal firewood cutting. (The pros and more serious users would always buy the 357XP.) That customer has almost completely switched to the 455/460. It is a good value, and they are holding up very well. We've seen a couple of oil pump failures, but that's been it. (And the pump already supercedes up to a new number, so the problem has been addressed)

Cat mufflers are a bit of a bridge for Husky as they convert to the new X-torq designs. They generate a LOT of heat. I generally try to avoid them, and there are enough saws in the Husky line that I can. (Except for the 346XP, which I still stock.) Knowing the heat they generate, and the obvious drop in power on the 359, I'd be doing my customers a disservice letting them spend the extra money for the 359, which in E-tech form is the dud in the catelog.

As far as mods go, they're fine for the AS crowd, but Joe Customer doesn't want to hear that he needs to make changes to his saw to get it to run right.

I don't think you can even get a stock non E-tech 359 in the US. Every one we've been shipped from Husky since 05 has been E-tech.

I just got a response to a e-mail from Husqvarna. They said the e-tech saws are the 353 and 359. I guess those should be avoided unless you want to buy an extra muffler. Thanks for all the help guys.
