nah.. it's not a big deal to do a muffler mod. something crude as drilling a few correct sized holes thru inner baffle will work fine. most will do neater job by welding a nice looking second port.

don't exceed 85% of exhaust port size and you will be fine.
you will need to adjust carb after mod, but again not a big deal.

didn't even realize there a Husky 460 and stihl 460 until this thread?
no comparison between the two :D

I just got a response to a e-mail from Husqvarna. They said the e-tech saws are the 353 and 359. I guess those should be avoided unless you want to buy an extra muffler. Thanks for all the help guys.

Get a replacement non-cat muffler! If you MUST modify cat muffler wear a VERY GOOD respirator with purple cartridges! But hey they are your lungs... you choose! Just because it doesn't show immediate harm doesn't mean it isn't shortening or reducing the quality of your life.

My next saw is going to be a 353. I am going to get a non-cat muffler for it. ;)

Spike, What about weight difference?

Just wondering if you thought there was a noticable difference in weight/balance between the 460 and the 359. I hefted a 455 the other week and it didn't seem that heavy. But I didn't have a 359 to do a direct comparison. Honestly, the 455 didn't seem like a bad saw. It's good to see some posivite rep on these saws from a dealer with experience.

The published weight difference is .7 lbs. 12.1 for the 359 vs 12.8 for the 455/460. I picked them up today and those numbers feel about right. They are orett close.

Helpful Post

I know I'm jumping in late here, but I want to add a couple things.

The 359 E-tech may be built better, but the 460 X-torq definately runs better. As to the power ratings, it should be noted that when Husky added the cat muffler a year or so ago, they did NOT change the power rating. In fact, they have yet to make such a change on any saw that received the cat. And it is obvious from many posts, some in this thread, that the power is quite different. In my mind, it would be better to just go up to the 357XP, instead of having to buy the regular muffler for the 359.

The 359 isn't just a dog in the wood, it's a dog in the showroom as well. This is mostly due to who the 359 customer always was. 359's were almost exclusively bought by guys looking for a step up from a 50cc class saw with an 18" bar for personal firewood cutting. (The pros and more serious users would always buy the 357XP.) That customer has almost completely switched to the 455/460. It is a good value, and they are holding up very well. We've seen a couple of oil pump failures, but that's been it. (And the pump already supercedes up to a new number, so the problem has been addressed)

Cat mufflers are a bit of a bridge for Husky as they convert to the new X-torq designs. They generate a LOT of heat. I generally try to avoid them, and there are enough saws in the Husky line that I can. (Except for the 346XP, which I still stock.) Knowing the heat they generate, and the obvious drop in power on the 359, I'd be doing my customers a disservice letting them spend the extra money for the 359, which in E-tech form is the dud in the catelog.

As far as mods go, they're fine for the AS crowd, but Joe Customer doesn't want to hear that he needs to make changes to his saw to get it to run right.

Off topic but I sure do appreciate a "pull no punches post" from a dealer.:D Makes this site very useful for regular people like me. Okay, done sucking up.;)

I think the 359 is worth while for anyone that is on here. Average joe homeowner will do fine with the 460

nice post spike.

Does the 460 have a spur or rim/drum set up and is the oiler adjustable?

They are even closer than that, as the 359 weights more than advertised........:biggrinbounce2:

I had a chance to run both a 2159 and 2157 at the dealer and the 2157 same as a 357 Just did not show me any more speed or power than the 2159. Even my dealer said save yourself the 120$ extra and get the 2159. Both saw's were brand new show room models and I was the first to run them cutting a 10 inch poplar for a test out back of the dealer.Since then I tried a 8 pin with my muffler mod and 15'' bar in 8 to 12 wood it is like a laser! My dealer is great guy and alway's gives me a hard time about my Poulan that wont die! He is the type that you could run a pipe on the saw and would warranty it as long as you put back the reg muffler and took his advise as to setting up the saw!

I'm guessing you are using Ralph's weights here for the 359 and the published weight for the 460. Is this a legitimate comparison? I think NOT!

My guess is that 2159 probably is one without a cat.........:yoyo: :yoyo:

Troll I respect most of your posts BUT anything that negatively reflects on that EXPENSIVE German copy of a Swedish saw or might actually present a challenge to your awe of that saw gets flamed!!! You display malice toward ANY saw by ANY manufacturer in the same class as the 361. For that reason your opinion has lost some standing with me and I suspect quite a few others as well!!!

This is areally good point you make here! Last week I went to a friend's property to help him cut wood for the cabin he is building I used my 2159 with muff mod and he used his 361. All he said was I could have saved 200$ By the way my 044 ate both in the bigger wood I will most likely sell him that one!

.....

Not at all, I am using KWF/DLGs actual empty powerhead weights, from their test reports.......:blob2: :blob2: :blob2:

I refrain from commenting on that one............:D :D :D :yoyo:

Btw, over here the 361 costs less than the 359 - saw pricing are not allways logic.

Muffler mod that 361 also, and the difference will probably be there again....

...and there probably some other variables that is unaccounted for also......:givebeer: :givebeer:

Austin; there is one point that you might not be aware of. The Jonsered 2156 comes with the cat, but so far the Husky 357 doesn't. (Both of the 59's have the cat). The 2156 has had the cat since it was introduced. (I ditched mine of course).

Also, and I'm not sure why, but the 2156/357 REALLY wake up after 5 to ten tanks of fuel. More so than the 59's. Once they set up, they are very quick, and the difference between them and the 59's is obvious.

In Canada at least were I live it is the other way around the 2156 is non cat and the 2159 has a cat. I ordered the non cat muffler from the dealer for my 2159 an extra 38$ canadian. Also my saw really woke up after 5 to ten tanks of fuel. All the 2156's on the shelf had the Grey cap and all the 2159's and 2152's had the green cap. For me I found the 2156 seemed fast out of the wood but cutting it felt no different.

Well troll if it comforts you I did tell him his saw was brand new and would pick up after the first few tank fulls of fuel ran in it. I would have bought a 361 but they are 200$ more here and I don't like the Stihl dealer at all.
